Parts compatibility was designed in to keep cots at a loss making company down, but its not a bad engine.
Its specific power is lower than some others as the main driving force was always intended to be torque for that effortless cross country cruising ability, whilst still allowing it to raise hairs on the back of the neck when desired.
High specific outputs can be obtained according to the designers (Cosworth) and have apparent been done so by individuals, but I havn't driven cars like that to comment on their durability, nor driveability.
