Was this the predessesor to the A4? like how the 100 was to the A6?

Also was it called the 80 in North America or was it never sold here/under a different name?

Yeah, this was the predecessor to the A4. The 80 was sold as the Audi Fox in NA for a while and was then replaced by the Audi 4000.
Audi humbles Porsche. A new dawn starts today.

    Being nice since 2007.

I had an Audi 80, similar to the very 1st pic in the above series. 1976, 4 door in a very cool yellow. It was a sprightly performer and handling was excellent when compared to other cars of the time.

However, the engine didn't last very well, started losing compression after only a couple of years and it had an electrical system from hell. Had several electrical beakdowns and lights not working was never just a simple globe. Some electrical failures were quite funny, at one stage when I would put an indicator on, the petrol guage would drop to zero and the rev counter needle would bounce in perfect timing with the indicator.

Sold it and have never considered an Audi again.

We start any venture with a full bag of luck and an empty bag of experience. The trick is to fill the bag of experience before we empty the bag of luck.

lol, sounds kinda amusing, the rev counter vs indicator bop. But I guess not at the time...
They're far better these days, since '99 with 2 of their cars we've not had a single problem other than in the first the radio turning itself right up if the vlume was adjusted in winter and an upper rear right tweeter constantly blowing and a friends parents have driven a 1991 Audi 80 extremely hard since new and it's still going strong, faultlessly. Still, they're probably not as reliable as anything in the Mazda range.
