The Trekka was a New Zealand made, tough ute made for cheap reliable transportation for farmers and workers of the time. They were made from 1966 to 1973, and sold byfamily called The Turners, who also sold Skodas, Volkswagens, and Fiats. The main inspiration for the Trekka was New Zealands restrictive car import policies at the time, making a locally built vehicle an attractive, and cheap, prospect.
It was powered by a Skoda engine, and also utilised a Chassis from the Czechoslovakian manufacturer, at a time where Czechslovakia was still under Soviet Communist rule.
Productions numbers were around 2,500, but only a few dozen now are reported to be roadworthy. I have seen good condition ones going for about 5 to 10 thousand NZ dollars.
It was produced as a ute, and also as a van.
