The largest air-cooled Volkswagen was introduced in mid 1969 and was named 411, (for no obvious reason). It was much larger than the type 3 it replaced, but still had a flat 4 of only 68 BHP. A big improvement was the introduction of fuel injection which raised power output to 80 BHP, still not impressive for an 1100 kg car. It was also the first 4 door VW ever produced.
There was also a popular Variant version, and later on the 412 was introduced which had a slightly modified front part.
The Type 4 became the last air cooled VW to be developed and was pretty quickly replaced by the Passat, after only 5 years of production.
Shown is a two door version at the Paleis het Loo Concours d'Elegance in 2004 (early in the morning)
