Getting ready to buy my first car.

Well my parents said they'd buy me a (cheap ****ed up) car if I passed matric(final year of school) and now it's almost time for me to get my results and seeing as I'm 100% sure I passed I've started looking around.

Thing is I don't exactly know what to look for or what cars are proven to be reliable. The smart thing to do would be to buy what every new student is driving because that's the cheapest to fix. (Which atm is a tie between VW Golf and Opel Corsa Lite).

    Here are some options:

(I'm not exactly sure if you can view them, they are from a South African website)

Oh and also my limit is like 16-17 thousand Rand but I'm sure I can push them to get up to 20.

    I think R1 = 7 or 8 US$

    Opel Astra 1.60i E

I would love to drive an Astra.

This one's probably a bit out there but I would so drive something like this.

    1800 VW Jetta CSX

Not sure why this Jetta is so cheap, it looks like it's in fair condition.

Honda ballade 150i 16valve doch shape

I really like the look of this car and I hear Honda Ballade's never break and should they - it's cheap to fix.

    1980 Ford Escort 1600 sport

I would love to buy this car and fix it up. The old Escorts and even the XR6 speak to my soul. I would make it blue and put white racing stripes on it.

Meh, don't know if I would drive a Uno

Worthless unless Eggnogged: post pics in "User's Rides" thread. Drivin' on UK streets at 15, huh? Not aware that was legal.

BTW, it's called "Mini 1275 GT", the Clubman is a different model.

What type of performance upgrades do you mean? And are they cheap?

Thing is I don't know if I can be responsible with a fast car since this is my first car.

Personally I'd rather have the Escort or the Astra. But I don't know if they will be easy/cheap to fix.

For what it's worth I am taking a Mechanical Engineering course next year. Not as a profession, but for general usefulness.

Also I wouldn't mind an Opel Kadett Superboss. Wikipedia says they hit 168 bhp.

    Nope.

South Africa had a lot of SA-only high performance specials including this Opel (and other Opels), V8-engined Sierras and 3 litre Alfa Romeo GTVs amongst others.

If you were back in the 60's or 70's in South Africa with an Escort or Cortina, I would steer you toward Willie Meisner for your tuning needs. However he is long gone, but AutoStyle Motorsports seems to have some options for you to consider.

The only pros for the Fiat Uno are:
    - cheap to run and maintain
    - easy to park

Srsly? The Fuego has a really bad reputation. It doesn't look that bad, but it could easily become a financial desaster when something breaks (and I'm 100% sure it will).

Buy the Escort. The others are meh.

I don't care. It was the last car my grandfather wanted to buy.

    So it's the Fuego still.
