Isn't a 535d mean diesel? Thats no hybrid
Isn't a 535d mean diesel? Thats no hybrid
I think that was the point.. allow me to elaborate upon coolieman1220's post.
Wherefore art the 535d not being released uponst this US market? Truely it has much greater potential for fuel sippery than this reuse of hybrid technology that the market has already soundly refused.
Part of the issue is that currently the 535d doesn't mean US NOx emission standards, but it could potentially be updated to meet them. I'd be interested to see what they could do with a 535d based hybrid actually.

Well, BMW is discontinuing the X6 ActiveHybrid (at least on the other side of the Altantic). I don't see much point for this even compared to a standard 535i.

BMW ActiveHybrid 5 from £46,860 - Autocar.co.ukBMW’s new hybrid-powered 5-series will cost from £46,860 when it goes on sale in the UK in February 2012.
The BMW ActiveHybrid 5 is based on the current BMW 535i saloon and achieves a 16 per cent improvement in fuel economy compared with that model
Using the 535i’s 296bhp twin-turbocharged straight-six petrol engine, the hybrid model adds a 54bhp electric motor. Combined, both power sources produce 330bhp and 332lb ft of torque – driven through an eight-speed automatic gearbox - giving the ActiveHybrid 5 a 0-62mph time of 5.9sec.
On the combined cycle, it will achieve 44.1mpg, while emitting 149g/km CO2 and top speed is limited to 155mph.
The lithium-ion battery pack – stowed in the car’s boot - enables the new 5-series to be driven at speeds of up to 37mph on electricity alone. A total electric distance of 2.5 miles is achievable when averaging 22mph.
Features of the new car include brake regeneration, stop-start and hill-start assist.
Bespoke touches include ‘ActiveHybrid 5’ badging on the C-pillars, grille and door sills and 17-inch alloys come as standard. Inside, the cabin is clad with a Fineline Anthracite wood interior trim with integrated satellite-navigation.
The BMW ActiveHybrid 5 makes its global debut at the Tokyo motor show on 30 November.
Yeesh. I figured they'd only bother in the US.

And since the 5 Series isn't what you'd call a car designed with the city in mind one of the main advantages of the hybrid is gone. I doubt the hybrid will make much of a difference in the motorway (unless it's got taller gears).

If the electric motor is set up for lower speed city driving (which would make sense) it's not likely to even cut in at high speed. I know that's how the 3008 diesel hybrid works.
