    Corvette GTP

In an obscure part of the Corvette display (at the Rolex Motorsport Reunion) was this awesome GTP racer. I almost missed it. The Peerless Corvette. Even though this car is more Lola than Corvette, I love it as if it were a stock 1988 as mine is. What an amazing car and an important piece of Chevrolet Racing History.

Obscure car in itself. I'm not old enough to have seen it raced in period but from the very little i've seen about it, it got collected in Davy Jones' massive crash at Road America. One of the chassis that is, not particularly this one

I recently got Mike Fuller's IMSA GTP book. Lots of fascinating history on that era of racing....

Did you know that there were THREE Mustang-based GTP cars? The Ford Mustang GTP, the Ford Mustang Probe, and the Ford Mustang Maxum GTP.

    oh the potential

The Corvette GTP could have been one of the most successful GTP cars of the period had it not been for unreliability and sheer bad luck. I also have the book "Inside IMSA's legendary GTP race cars" and the article on this car is one of the most interesting. During 1986 and 1987 there was little doubt it was the fastest car on the grid, it's been said the twin turbo V6 made 900-1000 horsepower in racing spec and 1200+ for short runs. That, by my reckoning, makes it the most powerful closed wheel racer ever behind the CanAm Killer.

The car was apparently a real handful to drive as well due to the strange seating arrangement without a neck support on one side, no power steering and cockpit temps as high as 140 degrees Fahrenheit. It's incredible to think how Sarel and Doc could drive this thing for the thick end of 2 hours at a time. A brutal car that needed mighty men to drive it!
