    Thinking about changing political parties...

We had a primary election here in gods country (nebraska) yesterday and I went ahead and pulled the lever for my man Ron Paul. There was a bit of a mix up however because since i bought my new house i havent changed my drivers liscence or registered to vote at my new address but luckily i was able to do a provisional deal.

so needless to say i need to register to vote at my new address and here's the big issue for me: Im thinking about registering as a libertarian instead of a republican

I started with the republican party in 2000 as a junior member (not old enough to vote but still old enough to rally) and I have been pretty active in the party since then. I started the first chapter of the college republicans at the California state university, Chico and through that my friends and I got a pretty good number of people registered to vote and got a good chunk of the county for the California gubernatorial election (ARNOLD). I was actually so active in that election that I was invited to a victory dinner with a couple hundred other people and the governator himself. When i transfered to the university of nebraska I joined the college republicans here and continued with my role in the party, including campaigning for a local representative danielle nantekes and everyones favorite president GW.

one might ask themselves, why would the rooster want to switch parties if he's been so involved as a republican?

Here's why i want to switch: The republican party is no longer conservative! And it has turned its back on and alienated what was its base for the past 50 years.(fiscal conservatives and believers in small government). The republican party now is pretty much the same thing as the democratic party (big spenders, big government, nanny state, ect...) only with religious groups behind the wheel instead of socialists behind the wheel. But basically its the same policy with a few moral differences in both parties.

Everybody who doesn't know much about anything always complains about bush being an evil conservative, but when you consider that he has grown the government, government programs, and non-military government spending more than Bill Clinton did its pretty hard to call him a real conservative. Another example of this is Arnold. When i was trying my hardest for arnold i was voting for a man with strong conservative beliefs, AKA, less spending, smaller government, fiscal responsibility. but after a short time in office he turned his back on his base and has spent money like crazy and turned into a global warming, welfare crazed, anti-free market, big government guy.

Unfortunately this is how I see the party going with the nomination of Mccain and just the way the party is heading in general. Personally, i think this alienating of its base is what has been causing the republican party a lot of its trouble in the past couple years.

so basically i am thinking about leaving the republican party and joining the libertarian party because the libertarians are more in step with my beliefs (and basically what republicans used to stand for)

Here's why Im thinking about not changing my party: I plan to run for political office some day, and unfortunately its almost impossible to get elected for much of anything unless you are either backed by the republicans or the democrats. I know there are still plenty of republicans who believe what I believe and they are just not in control right now.

What would you do if you were me?

Also, please try to keep this mature, no need for silly bush or republican bashing just for the sake of it everyone knows everyone has a different opinion on whats right and wrong.

Why do you have to register your party political beliefs ??

Can't you avoid the sheep and be independant or do non-affiliated politicians really get nowhere ? Isn't it determined by the quality of the job you deliver to your voters ??

what a system....we can just vote for the party/person we want to, without having any prior registration or what so ever....

Exactly what i was talking about, at the end of my post... that was a totally useless comment. this thread isn't about how screwed up you think america is, its about what you think i should do.

As to what matra said...when you register to vote, you write down what party you are in or you can say independant.

and as far as running on merit and avoiding the sheep I would love to do that but unless you have very deep pockets its hard to get the message about your merits across to the people voting for you without party backing. The last person to do it with any kind of success was ross perot.

O yeah and you can vote for whoever you want to vote for here too its just when you register to vote you fill in the box next to your political party and that is technically your party. you can still vote for whoever you want though.

I wasn't bashing republicans IIRC....and honestly my advise for you would be to vote democrat, in order to increase the trust the rest of the world has in the Republic of America.....

The U.S. needs Ron Paul, but doesn't deserve him.

yeah i know that doesn't help you much, but I just thought I'd share.

If i was in your shoes, I would flee and declare political asylum somewhere in the EU bloc.

it'll do wonders for your future run for political office.

I disagree with the democrats even more than i disagree with the republicans. they are becoming more similar, but the democrats are definately the greater of two evils from my point of view.

is anyone going to look at what i originally posted and ask relevant questions or are you gonna make rediculous comments like vote democrat or move to europe neither of which were options in my original post?

You only register under a certain party affiliation so you can vote in the primaries. They dont want republicans voting for the worse possible democrat or vise versa.
I'm not affiliated with either and I can still vote but I cant vote in any primaries.

that makes sense. Is there a possibility to actually become a member of a political party? (Members then could countrywide cast one vote, thereby avoiding this money destroying primary process....)

I'd personally say that if you are really serious about a political carreer it'll probably be easier to change things from inside rather than start from the ouside.

    I'd stay with the republicans.

yes, seriously speaking, if Ron Paul is still republican, then real (not this administrations') republican values are worth fighting for; thus, remain republican. this way, you'll be able to use the rock-solid line "AND I NEVER CHANGED PARTIES IN MY ENTIRE LIFE!" to secure some serious values voters.

so be the change you want to see in the republican party

    or something.

don't just go back and find the same proverbial couch indentation in nuzzle your gun-toting ass into.

Remember, Montgomery Burns is a republican
but then again, so is Bree Vanderkamp.

We can vote for whomever we choose. The registration is for party primaries, which are held first to decide party nominees. You should do some reading-up on the things you criticize...

Should people that need to ask who they should be voting for be allowed to vote?
