I had my Mum's old '82 Rover 3500SE (an SD1 in australia, they didn't want to associate with the bad press the SD1 got). I heard they went through a process of fixing the SD1s when they came here, but it was still at the mechanic's for about a week every month. Radiator, power steering, injector, burst tranny fluid hose, alternator... the list went on until I sold it. Shame really, there wasn't really much more that coulda gone wrong with it by then, and I really liked it. It was an auto though and I wanted a manual, so I got a BMW 323i.

My dad bought the Fiat back in 1991 to a lady who whas a family friend and who owned the car since new. By then car was completely rusty with holes beneath, and such. My father then had it completely restored. Only the engine and gearbox are still untouched from new.
From some years back until now my father completely lost is interest or patience to use the car and mantain it. So I took the responsability, started paying the bills and now I use the car regularly. Next year I hope I'll have the money for a new restoration process to make it 100%. It's about 85% good now.
Money can't buy you friends, but you do get a better class of enemy.

I always think if a car is always 100% you'll be worried about it going back to 85% again and won't be able to enjoy it so much Better in my opinion to maintain it at 85%

The thread is about your first car that you have or had, not what you want.

my first car was a red 1987 BMW 325. it was a hand me down from my mother, and i adored that car. had it about 3 weeks when a girl on her way to prom pulled out in front of me. her car went off the road and flipped, and mine had a crushed front end. a bunch of insurance money, and 3 months later, i got it back, all brand new looking. had that for about 4 months, enough to get me through the summer, get me a girlfriend or three, then i pulled out in front of a ford bronco. after the accident i knew the car was gone for good, and i sat on the side of the road and cried. still one of the saddest days of my life.
