Any day, any way I will take the Mercedes. Mostly because the Mercedes is less complex than the BMW, and because as I recall, the AMG is boosted. Torque talks. Oh, and there's that BMW image that I really don't like.

thats a bangle bungle against a great mercedes

S65: Great power, good looks, nice status symbol

760: Good power, ok looks, average status symbol

I'd have to say that the 7 actually carries that styling well, IMHO the only BMW that does that.

    No BMW love so far.

Their design, although to be commended for taking a step in the right direction, is too much for the conservative market that the 7 series is aimed at i.e. old businessmen, not interested in "design".

If the 7er had a "hot" version comparable to the S klasse then maybe, but the Merc has a slight edge.

Having said that - half the electronics in the Benz won't work properly, so I'd probably go for an XJR if I was in the market for a rapid-luxo-barge.

That's true, but it remains to be seen how well the BMW's hold up, the sheer complexity of them probably won't stand the test of time; so it'll even out, I think. And I'm still wary of Jags since our rental XJ's tranny decided to crap out with a whole 800 miles on the odometer.

And I also agree that for the more conservative set at which the 7 is aimed, that styling isn't going to work out very well. BMW's stepped into a minefield here, but you know, I'm sure they're loving all this free publicity. I don't think BMW's been brought up this much in years and had so much controversy surrounding it.

This is a great problem - once a car has any problems at all there will be doubters.

The BMW and Merc transmissions are probably just as likely to crap out on you statistically, but because it happened to you, in a Jag, it is the Jag that is unreliable.

That ZF gearbox is used in many other manufacturers besides Jaguar...

Coupled to British Leyland's desperate attempts to kill off the UK motor industry in some strange effort to get out of paying the workforce, Jag already has a bit of a dodgy reputation.

Maybe so, but in no car, no matter the maker, should a tranny breakwith 800 miles on the clock. I guess just having experienced it makes it more "real" to you in your mind, whereas we glss over statistics on these kinds of things.

I'm a BMW fanatic, yet I'd still pick any current Merc over most current BMWs.

why always bmw and merc :S, the A8 is at least as good as those... I dont like the MB image (snobs) :P. Anyway in this case I'd go for the MB because the audi isnt in this list. It's just that I think the 7 doesnt look as good as the MB.If it was the old(prev model) 7 vs the old S it would be the 7 for me.

I normaly like BMWs more than MB because of their "sportier" image. You can get a manual on most of BMWs models but not on MB cars. But since niether of these cars offer a manual option, I'd get the AMG becuase of it's performance.

    Wtf

First of all you cant compare these two becuase they are not in the same catagoury of power or performance.
If you would like to compare the 760Li then it has to be with the S600 or the Audi A8 W12. But if you want to compare the S65 then it has to be with the Hamman Tunned V 12 7 series.
