I'd go with the 2009 Mazda 6 AWD
What can you find in the way of Mazda CX-7s?

there is no awd option for the '09 6...
As far as the cx7, I test drove the 2.3t GT and loved it, thought it handled great. I have thought about the subu legacy and will suggest it. AWD isnt necessary but its a nice option to have. My family has never seen ownership of a bmw andm although the x-drive is new to me (never test driven it) I will keep it in the back of my mind. Nissan Altima will also be considered.

mazda 6 makes so much more sense (and value)

Wouldn't have thought so, we had a Discovery S1b 300TDI from new in 1995 until 1999, the only problems we ever had with it was the dashboard under the windscreen lifting up a little, before it was crashed in 1997/1998 (I forget) the front right indicator used to fill up with water (though still worked) and the day before we sold it I snapped the CD button off the stereo and lost it...Ooops

If its any interest, she went with a Subaru Outback. Plainly, she didnt think to highly of my suggestions.

Perhaps, but it was a fantastic fit for her needs.
4WD, sure footed handling, conservative and still somewhat sporty, but epically reliable.
You should have mentioned that in the first place
