Hasn't the lesson over hand guns taught ANYTHING ?
    1) that wasn't a racist slur unless you consider the word "French" to be an slur (which some people might but I didn't think you were the type)

    2) yes, the lesson over hand guns has taught us that by ensuring that law abiding citizens are unarmed it makes good people easy prey for bad people. If the pirates had more to worry about than a water hose perhaps a lot of them wouldn't be in the piracy business anymore. even if having merchant ships be armed would lead to the pirates using bigger guns isn't all bad. that would put a lot of pirates out of business because they couldn't afford the weaponry or the boats/ships capable of handling them.

I think the australians have learned a lesson over guns, maybe we should take a lesson from that too Crime up Down Under or is it only a good idea to learn lessons when it furthers your personal beliefs?

they all nauseate me. and all of you who argue vehemently on either side nauseate me.

This entire thread is almost baiting to spoil for America bashing. rj, what exactly were you thinking when you posted this? Did you think it'd be a positive fun discussion because it never is when you bring up America. And in that other thread calling the judges socialists and shit that's laughable and abhorrent.

Here's some hot button comments that you hear in threads like these: Obama sucks, Guns rule, gays rule, I love illegal immigrants, ban abortion, drop in the bomb was wrong, Vietnam was just, Clinton rules/sucks, Ronand Regan is the best person of all time, Bush is a warmonger, Obama is a socialist, the Southern US is full of extremely racist, stupid, and ignorant people, liberals are socialists, the Democrats are socialists, Bush was like mini-Hitler, Europe is full of socialists etc.

Let this stupid thread die and all others like it because at this level of discussion there is nothing learned - it's the internet and some people on the net never change their opinion because they think they are the authoritative subject on everything.

    Finally America sucks/rocks, Europe/Canuckistan is great/shit.

You know, I'm all for decent and respectful discussion/debate; it offers a different perspective of other points of view and it's interesting. However this seems to only work when everyone has that same frame of mind...

Read the article rj, and remove the 'pro-guns' glasses over your eye that you read it with, and its written with.

Australian press accounts report that the half a million-plus figure of weapons turned in to authorities so far only represents a tiny fraction of the guns believed to be in the country.

According to one report, in March 1997 the number of privately-held firearms in Australia numbered around 10 million. "In the State of Queensland," for example, the report said only "80,000 guns have been seized out of a total of approximately 3 million, a tiny fraction."

And, said the report, 15 percent of the more than half a million guns collected came from licensed gun dealers.
So the report says that the percentage of guns in the community really hasn't fallen, but crime still went up.

The selected statistics are very carefully chosen. The Victorian homicide rate went up at that time because there was a number of gangs that where involved in a very violent dispute (can new be watched on the show Underbelly), which had been quite peaceful until then.

The assault rate and violent crime rates are also far below what the USA has. So that means we (Australia) should have more guns?

You are also failing to note that the likelihood of being injured or killed is much higher if the person committing a burglary or the like feels threatened by the person being robbed.

just because things aren't friendly when a certain country or topic gets brought up doesn't mean it shouldn't be brought up. Is talking about America off limits or something? Im proud of what my countrymen did today on that ship and I'm not afraid to say it. Its not my fault everyone bashes America on here, but just cause they do doesn't mean im gonna go crawl into the corner and cry. everybody here is GM basher too, but when the z06 was cleaning up and the zr1 was dominating, I didn't shy away from that either and there are a bunch of people who dont shy away from topics like the GTR that dont always end up positive and fun on this message board and those are the people that keep this place running and keep it interesting

Sometimes the discussions we have are stupid. Sometimes they are fun. Sometimes they are enlightening, sometimes they are a waste of time and have you walking away feeling dumber than when you started. Sometimes they are intellectually stimulating and sometimes extremely boring and average topics turn into some pretty intense stuff, othertimes some normal stuff turns stupid and angry. but thats what keeps this place interesting. whats good about this site is we have a-holes like me who like to wave the flag and read too much into everything America does, then we have a-holes like henk4 who read way to much into everything America does (only from the negative), then we have a-holes like Matra who just gets pissed and then we have the people who chime in in between.

have you guys ever been on a website where everyone agrees with eacother? its boring! lets not let that happen here.

Yes they are far below what the rates are in the US, but they are much higher than they were before the gun ban.

Just because he's telling you that you are wrong, does not mean he is not contributing.
