No but I drive a 2002 Hyundai to work. Honestly.. no one cares. I'd even say that driving TOO nice of a car makes you look like a pretentious tool if you're entry level. I'd say get something sporty/classy but not over the top, like a GTI or older gen A4/S4.
What is that? Did I read a ghost roaming the pages of UCP?

The only judgement I would ever make about what cars people drive would be along these lines.

Ford Falcon – 40 year old storeman, smoker, redneck.
Holden Commodore – 18 year old P plater
Peugeot, Renault – They think they have a well built car because it’s “European”
BMW – ditto and they are willing to pay heaps for the privilege.
Audi – smug smart ass who knows better and buys one instead of a BMW because he is cleverer.
Hyundai, Daewoo – No interest in cars.

    This could be mostly wrong...

I'd say it's about right for Australia, though Falcon people aren't necessarily rednecks.

(note the thinly veiled sarcasm in the Audi line).

I think judging someone based on what car they own is a bit unfair. While I owned neither, for the past five years I have been driving a three-and-a-half cylindered Ford Escort and a Honda Civic, both placing me, allegedly, firmly in the refrigerator camp. I would like to think that I have good taste in cars and that circumstance hasn't allowed me to exercise my exquisite taste. (Ferrer, use this as an excuse for the Audi and tractor)

For the non-enthusiasts you are trying to impress or not piss off, bling, I would recommend an older sporty car. They tend to be a bit more classless due to the whims of the used market and can be fun without being excessively ostentatious. Old British sports cars are nicely resplendent in both charm and rust, but for something more reliable '70s and '80s BMWs are probably a pretty safe bet.

There I was thinking the Audi one was the most faithful to reality and didn't contain any sarcasm whatsoever.

    Silly me.

This is true, circumstance forces you to make some compromises sometimes, but you still have a little bit of choice anyway. Take the Audi, if it hadn't been the 2.8E it wouldn't even have bothered, so cheap + big powerful engine + time constraints equaled having Audi. As for the tractor, well it's been the best C segment car I've ever driven (second being the Hyundai), the diesel being again a choice because of the circumstances.

The thing is, given your circumstances you have to choose what fits best and I certainly don't regret any of my choices, even if some weren't exactly perfect.

    Yea I'm still alive.

I'm good. I poke my head in here and there but the automotive world is slow with the economy being shit and the board has quieted down a lot. I think the board lost some flavor it once had. Used to be a bunch of good things going: photo comps, guess that car/headlight, photoshop contests, gran turismo challenges, etc.

For me some of the pull has been lost because there isn't much to discuss these days unless a new supercar comes out or something crazy happens on Top Gear.

/digression. Maybe I should PM.. oh well. BTW, Wouter I'm seeing ads. That's some BS brotha.

In Australia, for the first few years you have your license you have to display a 'p plate' on the front and back of your car. It's basically a white square with a red or green P on it. The colour denotes how many years you've had it, though that varies by state.

If, when on your P Plates, you have a turbo-imitator (that magically does its job well) in either the exhaust or sound system, could a cop pull you over? Or is it only come "rego" time that those things matter?

Not sure, not wise old indian.

Or 18 yr old bogan that thinks a turbo imitator is cool. I imagine if a cop thought you actually had a turbo, you could definitely get pulled over. Whether or not you'd get fined is another thing. In my experience, if a cop doesn't like the look of you they'll flag you down for a 'random' breath test.
