Porsche has accused Nissan of cheating in the GT-R's record bid at the Nurburgring racetrack.

Porsche has just run its own back-to-back tests with the Japanese company's GT-R supercar and says it could not get within 25 seconds of Nissan's claimed record time of seven minutes 29 seconds in April.

It also found its 911 Turbo and GT2 were both quicker than the GT-R.

"This wonder car with 7:29 could not have been a regular series production car," says August Achleitner, the 911 product chief for Porsche, speaking to the CARSguide at the Australian press preview of the latest 911 Cabrio.

"For us, it's not clear how this time is possible. What we can imagine with this Nissan is they used other tyres."

He believes the time achieved by Nissan with ex-Formula One driver Toshio Suzuki would only be possible with a semi-slick race-style tyre.

Achleitner says Porsche took a standard GT-R, running on regular road tyres, and ran it around the Nurburgring within two hours of its own cars, on the same day with exactly the same weather conditions.

He says there was no tweaking of any kind and the GT2 and Turbo both ran on regular Porsche road tyres, the Michelin Sport Cup.

"We bought the car in the US. We drove a GT-R with new tyres," he says.

Achleitner was initially protective of the exact lap times, which were run during a program when Porsche also compared its upcoming four-door Panamera with a range of potential rivals.

But he eventually revealed his team clocked the GT-R at 7 minutes 54 seconds, with the 911 Turbo managing 7:38 and the GT2 getting down to 7:34.

The laps were not run by Porsche's usual hot-lap specialist, former world rally champion and race winner Walter Rohrl, but one of the company's chassis development engineers who is an expert on the Nurburgring.

Achleitner says the back-to-back comparison was run because Porsche was concerned by Nissan's claims for the GT-R, which is heavier than the 911 with similar power.

"The Nissan is a good car. I don't want to make anything bad with my words," he says.

"It's a very consistent car. But this car is about 20 kilos heavier than the Turbo . . ."

In the end, Porsche believes its testing has achieved the right lap times for the Skyline GT-R and benchmarked it against its own 911 heroes in the right context.

"For us it has been clearly the result. This technical puzzle now fits together. With the other numbers we had problems to understand it," he says.

Got the latest wheels magazine and they have a test of between the GTR , Porsche 911 GT2 and the Ford FPV F6.... the conclusion they came to was the GTR was the winner was quicker round the track (Mallala) by a massive margin of 1.6 secs (their words not mine)and equalled the 1/4 at 12.1( 1/4 mile times IMHO mean nothing) .

Ed Ordynski Ed Ordynski - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia was driving the cars and has no affiliation to either manufacturer....so there is no conspiracy theory there MC to argue about and ED was saying its the way the GTR puts its performance to the ground that makes the difference.

MC may still have a conspiracy theory but Ed Ordyski is a good church going rally driver ... he may be a rich one now with nissan depositing 10 million dollars into his bank account.... awaiting MC return serve on this debate

In other car tests the GT-R was slower than both the GT2 or other cars, nothing really new under the sun.

Probably something along the lines of what's his name is actually dead and it's actually the nissan driver.

But it's interesting how the 2nd page brags about the "wonderful" launch control, including how it can consistently send one off into the distance at a high rate of speed.
I'm dropping out to create a company that starts with motorcycles, then cars, and forty years later signs a legendary Brazilian driver who has a public and expensive feud with his French teammate.

I saw that, it was a token gesture to meet their Australian-Built requirements for cover stories.

Still, it was interesting that, considering the on-paper shortcomings of the GT-R, it was still much faster around this particular track.

And before claims of Bias come in, Mr Ordynski recently, in the Wheels Handling Olympics, Said the GT2 was the best of the bunch assembled.

The GT-R was not in that bunch, though.

Nissan have rarely been honest with their claimed "horsepower" and it was widely reported that the R33 GTR had a lot more than the factory quote of 206kW. Dyno testing put the car at closer to 225kW.

The R34 was in the same league, although by this time it had become a sort of a chuckle on behalf of Nissan who knew that the days of the gentleman's agreement in Japan were almost over. The R34 GTR as sold in Japan was good for 240kW, even though Nissan claimed a mild 206kW output still.

Mitsubishi have done it, so have Subaru, Toyota and Mazda. Honda to a lesser degree, but when I read reports of the R35 GTR having 550bhp, it didn't surprise me one bit.

I'm not a Nissan hater, I drive an RB30ET powered vehicle and I own another Nissan (I won't say what for fear of destroying my credibility on this post hehe!), but I didn't place much faith in their quoted time around the Ring. I'm sure that they played the game 'honourably' and within the spirit of Ring lapping, but until a motoring independant takes these cars and tests them using private vehicles, I won't place any faith in Nurburgring times.

They are however, great fun to read about and they do get the pub buzzing on Friday night. I'll probably never own a GTR or a Porsche in my lifetime, but you could bet your arse that if I COULD afford one or the other, I'd want the BEST one. Not the fastest one, but the BEST one.

    Which one would that be?

    Stuffed if I know!

More drama then an entire season of Neighbours in its Dramatic 19kw (claimed by you with no source) over

Oh Noes more drama then an entire season of Home and Away there! 240kw thats less powerful then a AU TE50 that thing must of been a ringer too! (again no source)

Worth Noting is that as HPI and wheels have tested new subarus to find that they have more then the quoted power from the factor as well as similar rumblings comming from the mitsu camp and we can never forget the special editions that just about always had over that ammount.

An australian talking about car makers lieing about quote performance figures HDT anyone or the VN group A and EB GT (both tested and found lacking in wheels of 1992) are some very high profile examaples.

Was there a point to all this or do you want to get your post count up how about some evidence to what you say? or possibly have a less cryptic ending? and prehaps going somewhere with the post?
