Mini for sure, Corolla is known quite well but doesn't really stand out. Mustang may be in the top 5 or 10 as well. Possibly any one of the 59 Cadillacs - not because a specific model stood put - I would lean towards the Eldorado if I had to chose 1 - but because they are the epitome of Cadillac. 911 possibly, the Ford-F150 possibly, Corvette.

I am lacking prewar cars and European cars though.

I don't think prewar cars could be considered icnoic since at the time cars were considered a luxury good usually only used by the elite.

Regarding iconic status I think there can't be only one option. Sure longevity and popularity are factors, but what about innovation and boldness? The Citroen DS is definitely an icon while not as popular as the Beetle.
Lack of charisma can be fatal.

I'd go with a Pontiac Aztek. It symbolizes everything of what a car should not be.

Once fanboyism infects you it impares all your judgement.
It's like being drunk, you lack common sense and everyone laughs at you.

I can see how it is iconic, but the mustang is definetely more iconic.

Not to mention, the mustang has been in production since day one without stopping. Cant say the same for the beetle.

And I'm pretty sure there are more mustangs than beetles on this earth. (not counting the actual insects of course)

    1) Volkswagen Beetle
    2) Austin Mini
    3) FIAT 500
    4) Citroën 2CV
    5) Ford T

Those are my suggestions for most iconic cars

I think you might be being a little USA-centric. Did the Mustang even make it out of the states?

EDIT: I think the VW Kombi is worth a mention. It's spawned more t-shirts and novelties than any car that I can think of.

BMW, every sport luxury competitor uses something of BMW for their own, they set the benchmark and others try to break it. Also copied, look at what some of you hate, the Bangle butt yet why are sooo many cars copying it?
a lot of people (either old or young) has put 911 as their dream car!!!

    Beetle
    911
    Mustang
    Corvette
    VW Bus

These are usually what comes to mind when you say "car" to someone not in to cars. They also all have some huge importance to automotive history. To me, that makes them iconic.

Not trying to be usa centric, but we do have more cars than anywhere else on the planet.

The beetle may be pretty big time over in europe, but over here where cars were born, the mustang is HUGE!

btw, im not really a huge mustang fan, I just think they are the most iconic.

Well, Nazism may have been HUGE! in Germany at one point but that didn't necessarily make it right. The Beetle was also extremely popular in America- I seem to recall it still being made in Mexico until not so long ago, or it could still be in production.

"...many attempts were being made in England by the 1830's to develop a practical vehicle that didn't need rails." (taken from ausbcomp.com)

Don't think America was where the car was born either, unless you're looking to the Flintstones for inspiration!

I think the point of an iconic car is that it needs to be timeless, classless and characterful.

In that case, my list goes like this.

    Mini
    Beetle
    911
    Microbus
    Mustang

All were pretty timeless- the Mini looked fresh right until it was discontinued, and the 911 shape still exists today (albeit updated somewhat). Classless... not too sure about the 911, as it seemed to be the preserve of yuppies for a while. Not something the hoi polloi seemed to own very much- but this is now changing. Characterful... all brimming with varied and individual personas. Mini is cute and playful, Beetle is kind of like Eeyore, 911 is a born slippy driver's car, Microbus is a cheeky car (?) with a job to do and the Mustang is a rip-snorting, apple-pie eating all-American.
