Daimler did prepare an SL for the 1981 season. It was tested in late 1980 by Walter Röhrl and once he told the factory officials that all they could was finish around 5th in Montecarlo (where they expected to win outright) if conditions were good (that means lots of snow and ice) Mercedes-Benz decided to end the works effort altogether, effectively leaving the 1980 WRC winner without a drive for 1981.
