In 1959 Fiat presented a six cylinder engine, initially in the 1800 and 2100 four door sedans, but the top model became the 2300 sedan, which was launched in 1961. The car also had a revamped nose, with double headlights. The six cylinder engine was designed by Aurelio Lampredi.
The most desirable version of the car was born when Ghia designed a coupe body, which became available by the end of 1961. Before some prototypes were built with 2100 engine, but the potential of the engine was such that it was decided to go for series production, based on the 2300 engine. The car was built in the Fiat factory, because of Ghia capacity problems. Initially the same power output of 105 BHP was maintained, but with the help of Carlo Abarth the 2300S version was pushed to 130 BHP which powered the car up to 190 kph.
The 2300 S appeared also in motorsport events but with limited success. Today not many examples have survived, but those that have, found a group of very dedicated followers.
