    Spied: 2008 Mercedes MLK/GLK-Class

Lately, there have been some pretty ridiculous “spy shots” of the forthcoming compact Mercedes SUV circulating online. Shots showing a 2007 C-Class mule may depict a platform under development, but they tell us nothing about how the new vehicle will look. The compact SUV has long been referred to as the “MLK-Class” in the automotive press. However, recent digging through U.S. patent office records shows that Mercedes may also be considering the name GLK-Class. Mercedes first filed for the GLK-Class name in July, 2005. This February, it also registered the name GLK63. The MLK name was last touched in 1996.

"K" stands for short in Mercedes designations. So, the GL which uses a lengthened ML chassis, has a short- wheelbase version called the GLK??? Wouldn't that give it an ML chassis? "K" could also stand for supercharging. In that case, the king of SUVs is about to arrive in the form of the GLK63, with a supercharged 6.3 V8.

MLK wouldn't work for the same reason JFK and FDR don't make good car designations.

Think of the marketing oppurtunities! You'd already have a catchphrase for the adverts, and they could make a special bullet-proof edition a few years into the models release; think of it as learning from someones elses mistakes.
