    It came with a 3.0litre 4 cylinder engine, with 236bhp and 225 lb/ft for the standard model.

    The Turbo S model had 305bhp and 369lb/ft

    I understand were MP is coming from, if I saw an LS1 in a Ferrari I'd have a heart attack.

    I can see why you guys would get upset if someone put a different company's engine in a Carrera GT or an F40 or something, but the fact is that the 968 isn't really that much of a special car. It was their low-end model at the time and although they seem to be pretty rare, that's only because they were overpriced from the start and didn't sell very well. Even if you do think it's blasphemy, it's only taking away the "passion" from a car that never got very much attention to begin with.

    The 968 runs the interstate like a rock w/ a remarkable, 240 hp, 3.0 liter Vario-cam 4 cylinder engine and its top speed of 158 mph. My 968 can turn a corner with most of the world's finest cars. That's the good, but there's also some bad.

    When we sink thousands of dollars into a good-running car, in the real world, we expect to see big horsepower gains -- but with the 968, big money that could be spent installing superchargers or turbochargers, [next to impossible to begin with due to extreme costs], is instead, burned replacing things like timing belts, power-steering pumps, pinion bearings, and motor mounts. If it were a Chrysler product trying to imitate the performance of an entry-level supercar that would be one thing... but we are talking about Porsches here.
    The following link reflects what owners of 968s [or 928s] often experience:

    Urban Dictionary: Porsche 968

    [url=http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Porsche%20968]

    I own a perfectly running, 968 with 90,000 miles, but this didn't happen without a lot of effort. The original owner did 2 - timing belts [$1,800.00] each [“retensioned” at 1,500 miles] done @ 37,000 and 76,000 miles, new power steering pump, eliminated bad oil cooler seals, front engine seals, installed new H2O pump, radiator, motor-mounts, along with the normal hoses, belts etc... and to cap it all off, the AC had failed also and rather expensive suspension repairs had to be performed as well... this is all “routine” for these 968s and it amounted to over 9,000 dollars, and [ZERO HP gain] from these efforts.

    The only “Frankenstein” feature of any stock 968 is the old, 944 engineering by Porsche that surrounds the incredible Vario-cam and its superb, 6-speed transmission... I will try to avoid the expensive repairs if I can help it, [as they are sure to come], I would prefer to sell my Variocam and install a 550 HP, 418 c.i. LS3 Goodwrench motor, run a longer 5th gear good for 165 mph, and install a tall, 0.600 6th gear in there to get me to 195 mph.

    Better to spend our hard-earned money on brute force.

    was hoping to give an update to this thread.... just some background...

    the 944 and Ferrari F-40 are the two best handling cars of the 1980s...

    the 968 was tied with the F-50 on the skidpad in 1993 as the world's best handling cars....

    recently, LS swaps for the 944s and 968s have become commonplace with straight bolt in, turn key kits that perform perfectly....

    the guy who owns the 968 pictured in the first page has since changed to a large displacement LS3....

    my Variocam did very well for 80 k miles but now the 418 c.i. engine from Texas Speed and Performance will be going in.

    i also have my 200 mph transmission built and ready to go.

    here's Tony G.'s amazing 944 website and videos....
