Pretty much as he clutch-monkey said, except this uses propane(not as fuel, but basically pressurized propellant). Basically your run-of-the-mill Coleman propane bottle(for outdoor traveling grill or gas lamp) with a special adaptor. They function mechanically very similarly to a real thing with slide blowing back and all. This is built for airsoft IPSC shooting, basically a type of speed shooting(what I like to think as autoX for handgun...)

Looks suprisingly like my kimber 45. Except for the accessories, and the barrel extention. But the grip looks very close, except that mines wood. So basically they look nothing like. Still looks pretty sweet though. Would pass for a real gun to me. In your state, are you required to put an orange plug at the end of the barrel?
