Yes, I welcome smaller, more innovative cars. You get more car out of less size.

Precisely. It's nice to have options other than a large car.

Oh God, a throwback sissy. Cars didn't get bigger for no damned reason. Safety? Entertainment? Appealing to customer needs?

HELLO!!! WE PLAY TO WIN THE GAME!!! HELLO!!

Today's cars are safer, faster, more enjoyable, more Earth friendly, and MORE EFFICIENT than the cars of yesterday. Don't like today's cars? Go buy your 88' Accord and SUCK. Sure you had the 40 mpg anomalies, but they took 80 hp and no insulation to get there. How fun...was that.

The past was not as fun as you make it seem.

I somehow don't think that was the point of his comment.

It was a statement of fact about how a "compact" modern car is in fact, in real terms, about the same size as a "mid-size" older car.

It's easy to make a van space efficient when it has a large footprint

To me, it sounded like complaining.

    Precisely.

One of my dad's co-workers said that the new 2008 Accord has gotten too big for him so what is he going to do? Buy a Civic instead since everything has gotten so much bigger over the years.

That's exactly why we have the Fit now.

Besides, the Accord grew because Hyundai is classified as a "large" car and Honda wanted to remain competitive. I don't foresee the Accord growing much larger than it is now.

Quick question- is the Nissan Altima the competitor for the Accord or the Maxima?

What exactly does the Maxima compete with?

Unfortunately with the Fit getting ever so bigger, we'll need another car to take its place soon enough. Like how the Fox and Lupo have taken the place of the Mk I Golf and Polo.

That's where Nissan gets a little strange. Sometimes people say the Accord competes with the Altima and some say it can compete with the Maxima. But I would think that one would need to go to the Acura TL, Toyota Avalon, Lexus ES for the Maxima's competitors (at least what Nissan is trying to compete against).

And I would think that Accord, Camry and Altima are competitors.

The Avalon and the ES 350 are a bit too soft to be compared to them, but I guess you are right, they're the only ones that can be compared to the Maxima.

The Avalon and ES are weird enough by themselves- I don't see much of a difference between the two cars besides styling differences and minor stuff. They practically cater to the same crowd.

Yeah, it's more about upscale midsize or "executive" style cars.

I worked at Lexus of Orlando as a service porter last year and I still wonder why there is an ES 350 and Toyota Avalon (Toyota dealer is right next door).

I'm assume by "Hyundai" you mean Sonata?
I'm pretty sure all cars are going to get bigger and bigger every year and the new smaller cars will come out and replace the old class. A Yaris today prob has about as much room as the Corolla a decade ago.
Maxima I think is in the Avalon/Azera class?

Personally I wouldn't put any Nissan/Honda/Toyota in the same class with Infiniti/Acura/Lexus. Some cars may be similar size but are often more luxury in the premium brands and in turn costs more. e.g. the ES may be the same size as the Camry, but prob priced similar to Avalon.
