Or you could buy an ethernet cable, cut and splice it to make a crossover cable

I'd pull the HDD out and use an eternal dealie or use a cross-over cable, if the Win95 PC has a network port. And there are easier ways than splicing the cable to make it a cross-over cable if you only have a LAN cable, either finding a switch and using two LAN cables, or getting an adaptor for a standard LAN patch lead to make it a cross-over.

I'd take the HDD out personally, because I like to pull things apart. And networking on a Win95 box is painful, especially if you don't know what you're doing.

Using just what you have on hand, they're easy to splice and you don't have to buy a switch or patch lead :P

Honestly though, most people will have a network router to share internet these days. You can use that to establish a network and just share the folder!

Or your network ports are auto-sensing.. In which case you don't need a special crossover cable...

I believe windows ME and better can do this. If one computer is XP and the other old, it might be possible, but I'm not positive.

It's a hardware feature of the LAN interface chipset if it can do autosensing or not. The OS doesn't know if it happens or not.

Actually I beleive that newer versions of windows specifically have a networking option to use switched signals in an ethernet card. I noticed it and thought it was interesting. You might have to have a card that can handle it too, I don't know all the specifications, but I know they have a specific thing for pc to pc networking with a cable that they didn't have in old versions, it just kinda... handled it.

That was.. something different. Automagic addressing system if they didn't detect a DHCP server (thing what hands out addressing info) so that if there's just some PCs linked together they can communicate with no configuration. It's only been in XP thus far.. I imagine it's in Vista.
