Your 3 Favorite Engines (of all time)

I've seen a thread here with the question "What is your favorite engine?" But not your 3 favorite engines.

Now, the question is, What are your 3 favorite engines of all time. And for those who can't narrow it down to 3, then choose 5. And the reason for your choices, if you want to.

I can narrow it down to 3 plus one "extra" and have posted photos for reference...

#1. 1967-1969 Dodge 440-Magnum 4-bbl. Big on cubes, plenty of torque yet very civilized- no problem sitting in traffic on a hot day. Also a rugged engine and responds well to mods.

#2. 1968-1970 Cadillac 472-4 bbl. High compression and a good cam generous lift and duration (more than some muscle cars, amazing as it seems) means plenty of power, actually had more rated torque (525 lbs-ft @ 3,000 rpm) than any '60s/'70s muscle car (the '70 Buick GS 455 Stage 1 came closest with 510 lbs-ft). Smooth-running, quiet and very reliable- internal engine problems are rare with a well taken care of example.

#3. 1968-1971 Mopar 426-Hemi. Not the best choice for street use, but the power it makes means I have to include it in my top 3. One of the most well-known engines ever built and the most successful drag racing and dragster engine.

Almost in the top 3: 1968-1970 Mopar 340. In many instances, ran better 1/4 mile times than cars like 396 Chevelles, 383 Road Runners and 390 Fairlanes (when in the lighter Mopars like Darts and Dusters). Relatively good fuel mileage for '60s muscle cars... 15 mpg was possible if you could control your right foot. And, like the 440, tough engines which respond well to mods.

1.Alfa Romeo 3.2 V6: Just look at the bloody thing, it's a work of art and then theres the noise. Yum, Daddy wants.
2.Subaru 2.2 Flat Four: Just noise puts it in my top 3, you can recognise a Scooby from the other side of town.
3.BMW 3.2 Straight Six: Again lovely torquey rumble and as smooth as silk when it comes to power delivery.

    1. 1971 351 V8 in the GT-HO Phase III as it was about 300-350 hp (a lot back then) as well as more torque than a truck as wellas being able to push the HO to the fastest sedan in the world (at the time)
    2. Ford Australia's Barra 240T (4L I6 Turbo) because it is unbelivably responsive, refined and easily upgradable along with its unrivled reliability.
    3. Ford Australia's Barra 190 (4L I6) same as the 270 T.

    1. Ferrari 250 engine. In my opinion the greatest engine of all time. Smooth, fast, reliable; depending on the cams this engine could power a luxurious GT car or a Le Mans winning race car and either way the engines were made in the exact same place in the exact same way.

    2. BMW M54 Inline 6. The truth is any BMW inline 6 of the last ten years should make my list, but I picked the M54 because served as the basis for the engine in last of the inline 6 M3s (S54B32) and it serves as the basis for the twin turbo inline 6 (N54) and because I used to drive my mother's 330Ci all the time and found it favorable to my Porsche.

    3. Porsche 1.6 litre Flat 4. Either in push-rod or DOHC configuration this little engine always produced ample power and lots of torque for its size. It wasn't the fastest engine, but even when you drive it today it can almost magically give you just the right amount of power and torque where you need it. Plus it has an excellent racing pedigree.

Runners up: BMW N62 V8, the ultimate luxury sedan/sports sedan engine found in the 545i/550i, 645Ci/650i and 745i/750i. Ferrari F133 "Dino" V12 (specifically F133E) because once again it meets all the things I'm looking for in an engine, found in the 575 Maranello and 612 Scaglietti.

My father wanted me to add this choices:

    1. Ferrari 250. Same reasons I put down.

    2. Jaguar XK Inline 6, specifically in 3.8 litre form. The Jag XK 3.8 powered both the D-Type, the XKSS and the original XKE. Enough said.

    3. Chevy Small Block V8. This engine powered a lot of sedan as well as Corvettes both on and off the track.

Runner up: Duesenberg J/SJ inline 8. 265hp to over 300hp and top speeds well over 110mph in the early 30s. Once again: enough said.

The Rover V8, powered most of the English sports car arena for ever. Plus my first car had one (SD1 Series 2). Also sounds sexcellent (see the various TVRs it was in).

Volvo I5. Wonderful sound, wonderful potential. Developed by Porsche and so tractable and easy to live with. See also: Focus/Monteo ST/XR5.

Merc AMG 55 V8. Entirely due to the sound. Although that ties with the Porsche Carerra GT V10 on the same credentials.

    1. Small block Chevy, Amazing amount of aftermarket and oem performance parts.
    2. Big block Chevy, again, massive amount of aftermarket available for them, along with the ability to bore and stroke them out to over 600ci and get over 1,000 hp. Shafiroff Chevrolet Drag Racing Engines and Ultrastreet High Performance Crate Engines Then revving that engine to 8,000 rpm is just insane.
    3. BMW S70/2, Mclaren F1 powerplant. Hearing the GTR at Lime Rock Park was an unforgettable experience. You could hear the car at all times, which doesn't happen often with the cars there.

    The Dodge Viper's V8 engine.
I'm dropping out to create a company that starts with motorcycles, then cars, and forty years later signs a legendary Brazilian driver who has a public and expensive feud with his French teammate.
