the best i ever achieved since i own my car was 9 liters. And that just because i wanted to knoe how much mileage i could get out of it. I ended up with about 420 kilometers on one tank (which is a bit small-only 45 liters). But i guess that's the same with every slightly aged car

It is. That's what I used to get from the Mini. And it has half the power.
Mind you, the Mini demanded to be driven like a lunatic. Always.

Some company has made an analysis of the average CO2 emissions of cars sold in the first quarter of this year in various parts of the world.
Now it is not the CO2 itself that is interesting but the related fuel consumption that matters...
so here we go:
Japan : 131 gr CO2/km
Europe: 140 gr
USA: 256 gr (excluding light trucks) and 268 gr inclusive.
In the USA 34% of the cars sold take between 11-15 liter per 100 km. In Europe this percentage is a mere 0.28% (Japan 0.7%)
Food for thought I would say....

The global warming will increase humidity in tropical deserts. Also the higher levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere trigger plant growth. As predicted, due to the global warming the sea levels will rise.
People are doing many things to try to stop global warming. One thing people are doing is carpooling. Carpooling is driving with someone to a place that you are both going to. This minimizes the amount of greenhouse gases put into the air by a car.

The thing is: Most Americans aren't prepared to pay the extra in terms of purchase price to get a more fuel efficient / less polluting car. Here in the UK, the RRP of an average-specification Ford Focus 1.6-litre diesel is over $31,000 USD. In America, you get a 2.5-litre Taurus for the same money.
