    Chevrolet 3100

    Chevrolet 3100 pickup 1947-1954

Introduced in mid-1947, Chevrolet's new line of pickups were the first new trucks to debut after World War II. They represented a major leap ahead when compared to its immediate predecessors. Extensive research had been conducted to determine what business owners wanted in a pickup truck, and the results were incorporated into what Chevrolet called the "Advanced Design." The Advanced Design truck was a hit, and was America's bestselling pickup every year it was available. The new trucks had a cab which was eight inches wider and seven inches longer than their predecessors, making them larger than any other competitor on the market. The wider, roomier cab allowed seating for three, while a wider windshield and bigger windows gave better visibility, which could be further enhanced by optional rear-quarter windows. The seat was made fully adjustable, and the doors were made larger for improved ease of entry, while a new suspension offered a smoother ride. A heater and defroster were standard, which were considered luxury items. The smooth, modern body with optional chrome grille certainly didn't hurt, either.

Three sizes were available: half-ton, called the 3100; three quarter-ton, called the 3600; and one-ton, called the 3800; with cargo boxes of 78, 87, and 108 inches in length.

The standard engine in all trucks was the very reliable 216.5 cubic inch inline-6 that put out 90 horsepower and 174 pound-feet of torque in 1947, a carryover from the previous model. Tweaks in 1950 improved performance to 92 horsepower and 176 pound-feet of torque. 3100s and 3600s came with a three speed transmission with a four speed optional, while the four speed was standard on the 3800.

GMC versions of the Advanced Design were also available, with a more powerful 228 cubic inch inline-6, and additional luxury options.

The Advanced Design trucks underwent only minor changes through 1953; 1954 models received a one-piece windshield and a new grille. Also in 1954, the inline-6 increased in displacement to 235.5 cubic inches, producing 112 horsepower and 200 pound-feet of torque. The Advanced Design was replaced in 1955 by a line of all-new V-8 trucks. These trucks remain popular today with both collectors and customizers, and can even be purchased in 1:24 scale.

I photographed this baby blue 1950 Chevy 3100 in a University of Virginia parking lot next to Bryant Hall. As you can see, it's for sale for $4000 and has an engine from a 1953 model. The lighting was less than ideal, but I think most of the pictures came out well enough.
