Actually it wasn't, the BMW 2002 Turbo beat it (was launched at Frankfurt in late 1971) and even before the Chevrolet Corvair had a turbocahrged engine in 1961. The Porsche 930 Turbo didn't appear until 1975.

The boxer engine does present a challenge in this respect. Do you know whether the two turbos in Porsches are the same size?
What you're referring to is the Sequential twin-turbo system, this is used on the Mark IV Supras and the new BMW turbodiesels.

Most twin-turbo setups use turbos of the same size.
The 415bhp 996 Turbo used KKK K64 turbos, both the same size.

The very first 911 turbo used a single turbo.
I couldn't find a definite answer when the 911 went single to twin turbo.

I must say, I think they need to chunk the front bumber up a bit more, and get rid of the mesh...doesnt suit it. Then again, in the old model, the Carrera 4S shared the same/similar nose to the Turbo...maybe they'll do that again? Whatever they do, I cant wait. Hope it becomes the new benchmark, as the 996 Turbo always has been...

pure speculation. No info from porsche has been released as of yet.
The car is due in close to a year from now, so any spy pic will only be a modified 911 test mule. remember the test mule for the enzo?

    The looks are complete speculation.

That the 997 Turbo will have VTG is fact.

It's got to have more power than the 996 Turbo, isn't that an unwritten rule, that a new sports car has to have more horsepower than the one its replacing.

I think the new Turbo is going to sound phenomenal. The changing pitch of the VTG turbine combined with the wonderful boxer flutter...*goes misty eyed*

It's passworded so only people with Porsche press credentials (magazines and such) can log in.
We'll have to wait for someone to get the pics for us.

This looks to be a nice improvement over the 996 Turbo. I've heard that it will have around 500 hp.
