    SLR, Carrera GT or Enzo?

Which of the cars above would you choose?

I would choose the Mercedes SLR! I think that's a fantastic car and it looks really great!!

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren, which is set to celebrate its world premiere in autumn 2003, revives the glorious tradition of the SLR and marks the reawakening of Mercedes-Benz’ passion for super sports cars. It is a passion which can be traced way back through automotive history and which was demon-strated with particular élan in the 'Uhlenhaut Coupe'. A contemporary interpretation of stylistic elements lifted from the original SLR and design details taken from the 2003 Formula 1 Silver Arrows allow the 21st-century SLR to form a bridge between the past and the future, bringing cutting-edge motorsport technology to the road, just as the inspirational SLR Coupe did in 1955.

The new super sports car allows Mercedes-Benz and its Formula 1 partner McLaren to showcase their collective experience in the development, construction and production of high-performance sports cars. This combination of knowledge and expertise is evident not only in the host of pioneering developments, impressive performance figures and superior driving characteristics of the SLR, but also in the extremely high levels of safety and practicality which it offers. These attributes come together to form the basis for an automobile with a very special charisma – an impressive synthesis of Mercedes tradition and innovation in every respect.

One example of the transfer of expertise from Formula 1 into sports-car develop-ment is the series production of sophisticated carbon-fibre composite materials in the construction of the chassis and body. This allows the new Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren to boast a level of rigidity and strength never before achieved in road-going vehicles. Equally as exemplary is the level of occupant protection: specially developed and exceptionally effective carbon crash structures help the super sports car to set new standards in its vehicle class in terms of energy absorption.

The high-performance sports car’s brakes are also made from a new and innovative composite material. Fibre-reinforced ceramics stand out with their extremely high heat resistance, outstanding structural strength and long service life. Meanwhile, under the bonnet lurks a V8 engine developed by Mercedes-AMG and featuring state-of-the-art supercharger technology, which delivers majestic torque and power development. Every SLR engine is built by hand at the custom engine manufacturing facility.

I don't know exactly why, but if I had to chose I'd pick the Porsche. Maybe I can explain: I've got this little bug inside my head, that always says to me: 'Porsche, pick the Porsche'. There's no rational reason for it, cause the three cars are just in emotional way totally different. That's what it is with supercars: your head doesn't choose which you like the most, it's your heart...
Maybe it doesn't belong here in this topic, but I think there's another Porsche that even is better than these three cars... It really must be the 935, the Moby Dick version. (Yeah, I'm a huge fan of NFS: Porsche 2000...Really, of any NFS is that one the very best!) That one really makes my petrol-drained heart beat a couple times faster than normal...

Ehm, hard choice between the Enzo and Carrera GT.
But I'd choose the Carrera GT because it looks better and is cheaper>better value for money. Color: black

My vote goes to the Carrera GT.

I'm not a huge fan of the SLR, too much luxury GT cruiser than hardcore super sportscar. I mean honestly, 5 speed auto 'box and a trunk big enough for 2 golf bags? It seems to me to be far too oriented towards the the ultra-rich business man or celebrity, who'll only buy it for the prestige and pose value, not for any serious driving.

The Enzo is undoubtably a stunning achievment, and it's a car that only Ferrari would have the balls and the considerable techno knowhow to produce. My problem with it is this: whenever a car company attempts to unashamedly show-off their technical prowess, and lavish as much technology as possible all over the car, they run the risk of it dating seriously quickly. It's the "Aston Martin Lagonda Effect". Back in 1976 AM created a car that seemed radical and futuristic in every sense, wild looks inside and out, massive onboard computer and a high performance V8. However, all too quickly it started to look a bit silly as car design moved on through the eighties. Nowadays it looks like a prop from a low budget seventies sci-fi TV show! (see www.astonmartinlagonda.net for the proof!) I worry that in trying to be too outrageous and conspicuous with their use of technology (the ultra aggressive styling, flashing lights and fancy buttons all over the dash etc), in 15-20 years time people will think the Enzo looks like something from a low budget 00s sci-fi show.

The Carrera GT on the other hand seems to stay a step back from the cutting edge in terms of its styling. Obviously it is just as technologically advanced as the SLR and Enzo under the skin, but it doesn't make a song and dance about it. The lines are pure, simple and elegant, with obvious references to sportscar racers but nothing over the top. The interior too is good looking, totally efficient and ergonomic, and sticks to the classic understatement that we expect from modern Porsches. It is a beautifully styled car, but not in the overt and pornographic manner of the Enzo and SLR. I think that in twenty years time it'll be the Carrera GT that people will still look at with the respect and admiration it so rightly recieves these days.
