Just randomly asking...wasn't the 959 the spiritual predecessor of the current GT2 RS (if you eleminate all of that "homologated rallye car" stuff)?

Not really.
I think it's more of a 4WD 911 Turbo predecessor than anything else.
GT2 RS wasn't 4WD.
Edit- Forgot that early Turbos weren't 4WD.
So maybe you're correct?
How much of the 959 was based on the then current 911?
I would say it's more of a Carrera GT predecessor then- no expense was spared to make it fast.

Andreas Preuninger, Manager of Porsche High Performance Cars: "Grandmas can use paddles. They aren't challenging."
It was kinda the precurser to the 4WD turbos, except that when the 4WD turbos appeared they had a much simpler 4WD system. Other than that it was really just an engineering exercise and image generator.
Life's too short to drive bad cars.
The 959 is the first of the Porsche supercars. So that includes the 911 GT1 Strassenversion and the Porsche Carrera GT. And all of them were related to racing. And yes, the driver in #25 is indeed Walter Rohrl.
Lack of charisma can be fatal.
Visca Catalunya!

For those of you who want to see Jay Leno's take on the Porsche 959. Considering he owns a Carrera GT, I'm surprised he doesn't already own a 959.

Interesting hearing the 959 in the video too. Definitely not a high pitched flat 6 howl.
