Was it common to have multiple companies designing a car, then ferrari choosing one of the designs?

In my eyes, that design is quite mundane, especially for a Pininfarina body on a Ferrari. It resembles an F430 of its day; nothing majorly wrong with the styling or proportions, but lacking flair as well.
Sure, some details are sublime, but the car is quite uninteresting to look at.
It also has an unattractive overbite.

Ghia produced a similar car for Chrysler called the Dart, front facia changed but not much else. They sure went nuts with the fins...
Never own more cars than you can keep charged batteries in...
