    6 speed paddle shifter.

18" wheels (vs 19 on the Challenge).

Weight is, again ACO mandated minimum, 1245 kg / 2745 lbs, up 27 kg / 60 lbs from the 430.

In 2010 they used 7 speed dual clutch....now going to 6 speed Hewland sequential.
Are these GT2 rule changes for 2011, or specific specs that have been set for the 458?

    No rules have been changed.

I really like it, the yellow lights make it look even angrier and meaner. They should put yellow lights onto the Challenge too just to make it look better, haha.

    Auto News - 24 Heures du Mans 2011 - New Ferrari 458 GTC - LeMans.org

Three days after the official launch of the Porsche 997 GT3-RSR 2011, Ferrari responded by revealing the 458 GTC.

Without a great fanfare, Ferrari was content to broadcast pictures of the first tests, accompanied by a very evasive statement about the technical characteristics of the vehicle. For now, we must satisfy ourselves with the resolutely serene comments of the Director of Customer Competition.

Antonello Coletta, Ferrari Corse Clienti: "We are pleased with first impressions of the driver and engineers. The development of the car is still in initial phase. Fortunately, with the benefit of better weather conditions than expected, we collected more data than the first two days of tests carried out in the rain and snow."

The development of the Ferrari 458 GTC will of course continue in the coming weeks, until the 12 Hours of Sebring that will mark the beginning of the season for ILMC. It remains unclear who will be the teams to acquire the descendant of the 360 GTC and 430 GT, but we imagine that AFS Corse and Risi Competizione will be in the front line.

458 GTC takes its first steps at Fiorano

Maranello, 10 December – A few days after the official launch of the 458 Challenge at the Bologna Motor Show on 2 December, today saw the end of a two day shakedown carried out by Ferrari at Fiorano of the 458 GTC, the latest jewel to emerge from Maranello, which will be taking on the opposition in the most important GT races at international level.

The car’s development on track has been entrusted to Jaime Melo, the Brazilian who competed in this year’s American Le Mans Series with the Risi Competizione team. He also teamed up with Gianmaria Bruni and Toni Vilander in the AF Corse squad’s F430 GT2 to bring the Prancing Horse the Constructors’ title in the 2010 Intercontinental Le Mans Cup.

Antonello Coletta, head of the Ferrari Corse Clienti Department had this to say about the initial testing of the 458 GTC: “We are pleased with the feedback we have had from the engineers and drivers about the car.” Development is in its initial statges and this is just the third test the car has undergone at Fiorano. “Thanks to the good weather these past two day, it has been possible to gather more data than in previous sessions, which were run in snowy and rainy conditions.”

The next step? “We will continue development over the winter months, which will culminate in the car’s debut in the Sebring 12 Hours, the famous endurance race and the first race in next season’s American Le Mans Series.”

So why is the 458 GT2 heavier and less powerful than the 430 GT2?

The 2010 Le Mans entry list has the F430 GTC at 450 bhp and 1245kg. Like Porsche, Ferrari opted to run the car at the maximum weight to allow the largest available tyres to be fitted. Porsche did have slightly narrower tyres than the Ferrari but had more horsepower. The Astons ran at 1195 kg but only had 13" rear wheels compared to the 14" fitted on the Ferraris.

I am assuming the race car still runs 18" diameter wheels? Its interesting how now the new cars are all designed to roll on 19s and 20s and you slap the 18" on and the proportion looks slightly odd especially in that profile view.

The car looks very nice, the rear arches look positively menacing from those elevated 1/4 shot. I kinda wish the hood vents on the front look more "stylish" as the rest of the car is very sculpted(production car does as well), and the pure functional look kinda doesn't fit the theme...

Final version doesn't have fins over the extractors on hood, or the ugly three piece test rims.
