a grey Ferrari F430 Spyder driving past school as I came out
the new BMW 3series cabrio and by god it's fugly!!!!!

and walking up the road to mine a VERY loud, VERY orange Mosler MT900R

I saw a 1965 Dodge Dart GT Thursday (picture attached), and a light blue Dodge Dart sedan of similar age today.

I also saw my first "Barack '08" bumper sticker recently. It's one thing to declare your candidacy more than a year before the actual election, but to start printing bumper stickers?

A few RangeRovers a nice black Touareg V10TDI and this old Ford pickup, US Import, I took the picture too early though so it's only got the front half as it passes by...

EDIT: How do American Numberplates work? Like, here in England it's Location, Age, Random identifyer eg. RA(location, Reading area) 05(first half of 2005) JWW(Random letters) and it used to be eg L(Age=1993) 840(random numbers) BPF(Location= Bordon area) but I don't understand US number plates, they change all the time, like i saw loads with lots of letter and lots of numbers all jumbled up and our hire Chevrolet Cobalt has W08 GJN which is like a pre 2001 UK plate

Like most American automotive rules, it varies from state to state. Most states have license plates (or numberplates, if you prefer) of 6 or 7 digits/letters, although states with fewer cars (like Delaware) may only have 5, and states with more cars (like California) may have more.

Generally, the letters and numbers are randomly generated with no meaning, but in some states the letters may indicate the county (I'm pretty sure North Carolina and Hawaii do this; there are probably others). The patterns of numbers (0) and letters (X) also vary from state to state; in Virginia it's XXX-0000 (many years ago they used XXX-000), but in Florida I think it goes XX 00 XX.

Then of course there are vanity plates, where the randomly generated numbers can be replaced by a personalized message for an annual fee (in Virginia, the money collected here goes towards various transport projects I think). Obviously, though, no two cars can carry identical messages. A while back there was an article in the Washington Post noting that the state of Virginia has the highest percentage of cars with vanity plates in the nation (something like 18 or 19%, or nearly one in five) .

There are a whole lot more variables, but those are the most basic.

I can tell you that the last 2 numbers mean the location of the car. They are the number of the department. For instance Paris is 75, Perpignan 66 and Toulouse I think 31.

BMW Z4M and my life flashing before my face as i cycle round a blind corner to see an old Alfa Romeo overtaking 5 cars and hurtling straight towards me, the driver about 3 cars length away from me about halfway past the Golf, swervs in front of the golf having seen my scared, wideyed face yelling 'F**K F**K F**K!!!!' just clears the Golf and missing me by about 4ft, me slamming on my brakes back tyre sliding out to the right sending me on a crazy 25mph slide on my Dad's bike ending in me falling sideways the bike spinning a full 360degrees hitting the kurb and sending me flying into a nice prickly bush.

A Lancer Evo IX and Ford Escort RS Corsworth. I also overtook a Seat Toledo which happened to have a mobile radar on it. Fortunately I was doing 120km/h...
