whats wrong? the 80GB is backwards compatible too. it just uses software instead of hardware. it only rules about 1% of ps2 games un-playable. consider yourself lucky. in the UK all we get is the 40GB. where thats fine for me because im keeping my PS2. Its not fine for most people..

oh yeah sorry i forgot to mention. its being reintroduced towards the end of the year. but we dont know if it will use the same backwards compatibility as the last 80GB or share the hardware of the 60GB (r.i.p). The good news is that its also coming to the UK.

I have far too much I need to do before I even consider another console, however, that may prove to be just as well because hopefully by the time I consider a PS3, Sony will have sorted-out all these issues and I'll be able to buy a fully-featured version without any bugs that may affect earlier units.

Well I don't know of any particular issues, but as with nearly all things these days there are bound to be one or two niggles with early PS3s. I mean: Look at the 360! I only bought mine for the games that are exclusive to it (Forza 2 etc.) - the actual console's not too great in terms of a hardware/software package.
