I wonder why the spit is painted like that. Silver doesn't seem to be a godo war colour; maybe it was repainted?

Really? I thought silver was good because you know, clouds are grey.

And many warplanes just had polished metal. I think it was to cut down on weight, you know, paint weighs something.

henk, should i enter this one just to be awkward?

    (not an entry)

p.s the silver spitfire in your photo that they flew at goodwood rather than the blue griffon-engined spiftire that is usually flown is wearing the natural metal colours and squadron code UF-Q of Spitfire MJ205, which flew in this scheme with 601 Squadron during 1944. Both are spectacularly well kept examples.

Nowhere is it written that I have to do this alone. I might take a shot at it if no one else does, but if someone else wants to set those voting threads up, I won't complain.

I got those from last year....so the shots are too old to enter.
Thank you for the info on the Spit, I think according to the programme, this on started life as photo reconnaissance plane, later to carry weather equipment.

did it sound significantly louder than the hurricane whilst in flight? if so perhaps it too is a griffon powered spitfire rather than a merlin. They have quite a roar as they flyby something not usually associated with the spitfire. The griffon spitfires were first and foremost used as photo reconnaissance aircraft running at speeds well over 400mph at higher altitudes than the lower powerered yet lighter and more manouverable merlins, so it is likely that is what you saw
