Taking centre stage at last weekend's rather cold Goodwood Members' Meeting were the 1970s and early 1980s Group 5 silhouette racers. Driven with great verve by Dutch WRC ace Kevin Abbring was a striking Fruit of the Loom liveried BMW 320. Powered by a Formula 2 engine, the compact and very light BMW was one of the few cars to take the fight to the dominant Porsche 935s. The featured example was raced in the 1978 DRM by the hugely talented Markus Hottinger. He scored three victories, including one at the Nordschleiffe.
Developed by Ferrari and Pininfarina, the slippery 512 BB LM is a great example of the silhouette racer. Ultimately, the package did not turn out to be particularly suited to racing due the engine being mounted on top of the gearbox but the cars are nevertheless highly sought after today. Four of the 25 examples were on hand, including this car, which is the very last one built. Delivered new in Belgium, it has recently been repatriated after spending most of its life in American ownership.
Another highlight of the weekend were the half a dozen 904 Carrera GTS Porsches entered in the opening race of the Members' Meeting. Among them was chassis 904-045, which was delivered new to noted British privateer raced 'Dickie' Stoop. It has recently been completely restored by Maxted-Page and turned a wheel anger for the first time in many years at Goodwood.
