That's somewhat low-geared, at least compared to the more economy-minded cars, not too bad though. Your average fuel economy sounds about what I would expect out of it for most people.

Let me give you some examples. Top gear speeds per 1,000rpm:
- Mini Cooper (1600cc N/A, 122 bhp, 6 speed manual) 37,5km/h
- Caterham Seven Roadsport (1600cc N/A, 120bhp, 5 speed manual) 32,9km/h
- Abarth 500 (1370cc turbo, 135bhp, 5 speed manual) 36,4km/h
- Renault Twingo RS Gordini (1600cc N/A, 133bhp, 5 speed manual) 29,8km/h
- Audi A1 1.4 TFSI (1390cc turbo, 122bhp, 6 speed manual) 47,4 km/h
- Honda CR-Z (1500cc hybrid, 124bhp, 6 speed manual) 40,2km/h
- Peugeot 208 1.6 VTI (1600cc N/A, 120bhp, 5 speed manual) 33,8km/h
- Ford Fiesta 1.6 (1600cc N/A, 120bhp, 5 speed manual) 31,7km/h
It's curious that both generalist superminis have shorter top gear than my sportscar, and so have both the Twingo RS (very, very short gearing this) and the Caterham.
Only the Mini, with a 6 speed manual, the hybrid Honda and both turbocharged cars have a taller top gear than mine. And only the Audi's is clearly longer, the other two are neck and neck with mind.
The thing is my car pulls cleanly in top gear, it's not the fastest car in the world but from 60-70km/h it is an operative option. The key is probably a relatively big 1800cc engine.

My Echo runs about 24mph (39km/h)/1000rpm in top gear with converter lockup. My wife's Kia is about the same, as was my SVT Focus (same as your old ST170) in 6th gear. I know that the Honda Fit is getting about 23mph (37kph)/1000rpm and is considered a relatively short-geared car these days. My first Focus, a 2000 model with the Zetec 16v 2,0l and automatic did about the same as the Fit. The SVT Focus was a dog in top gear pulls, though it was perfectly fine being short-shifted into about 1100rpm. Roll on the throttle though and it didn't wake up until those big Cosworth valves flowed from about 4k rpm to the 7k+ redline.
I am not surprised he superminis still have short gearing, that's how they are able to perform well, as heavy as cars are getting these days.

Took a little pleasure drive during lunch. Crested the 100mi mark on the tank while I was at it. Needle has just started to budge, a good sign for improved fuel economy, but I had hoped for a few more mi before that happened. Looks like my ScanGauge calibration is way off, it has been telling me 50+mpg (4,7l/100km). I would expect 39-41mpg, roughly 5,85l/100km

Gave my Dad his device back today, did a short-fill in the Echo to measure my performance on it. Came back better than I had been doing, right in the 39-41mpg range I had expected, but not as good as I had hoped.
121,1mi on 3,032g = 39,94mpg (5,89l/100km)

jcp, what is the status of the Mustang? I just saw in your sig it is up for repairs!
Needs a front end. A lane change from an oncoming car in light rain which had just started (slippery) made over my turn across traffic from routine to...over the curb. Mustang's front end didn't like it.
I can see one bolt on the lower a-arm @ the brake spindle is bent all to hell. I am not sure if/what else it needs. A shame since most of that front end has only about 25k miles on it. It was as tight as any new car.

38,79mpg (6,03l/100km). Toyota Echo. 1NZFE with automatic "transmission". LOL. Still waiting for the damn thing to go out so I can drop a stickshift in there.

This month I drove home a lot of times. Over in total 2564 km I had an average mileage of 11.2km/l. Not too bad I suppose, since a lot involved rush hour driving and night time stints back.
2.182km (1,355 miles) journey. MX-5 averaged 9,05l/100km (24.7mpg US / 31.2mpg UK).

6,1l/100km (38.5mpg US / 46.3mpg UK) in the last two tanks.
Going at a snails pace does wonders for your fuel economy.
Or something.
