I am celebrating the birthday of some fellow named Stevie Ray Vaughan. I am listening to his rather good cover of Voodoo Child.

Since it's getting close to Halloween, here is a song which relates to it. It reached #1 in Oct., 1962...

Well there is obviously an enigma that makes him interesting beyond his music. I also like Son House. The really early guys were all the more interesting because they were not necessarily playing in 4/4 time like the blues and most rock music ended up. They would play extra bars here and there and their lyrical phrasing is also interesting.

Well, mostly because of marketing... it was Columbia Records' release of "King of the Delta Blues Singers" in 1961 that contained most of the myth, instigated by John Hammond (John Hammond Jr. happens to be a friend of mine). The folk revival was well underway and Hammond rightly saw potential from tracks easily and cheaply obtained. That Johnson recorded just 29 songs was part of the mystique.
Largely because WC Handy published what had otherwise been un-written (charted/published) folk music, blues recording artists became very popular in the 1920-30s. Bessie and Mamie Smith were major stars, as was Charlie Patton, and along with Skip James, Tommy Johnson, Lemon Jefferson, Pink Anderson, Bill Broonzey and too many more to mention the form held public appeal, influencing pop and jazz. Without Big Mama Thornton, there would be no Elvis as we know him.
One of my all-time favorites. Death Letter Blues and Grinnin' in Your Face exemplify his style, which was where Robert Johnson got his.
