Jaguar XF-R vs. XJ Supersport

Gang,

I got a good look at both the new Jaguar XF-R and the XJ Supersport at the Beverly Hills Concourse this weekend. I was quite surprised to discover that because the larger XJ SWB is aluminum (vs. the XF being made of steel) and because both cars have the same drag coefficient they have identical 0-60 (4.7 secs) and identical fuel economy. Both cars have 510hp at the same rpm and identical torque figures and are both limited to 155mph. I priced them both our on Jag's website and my ideal XF-R came out to about $82,000 and my ideal XJ Supersport came out to $111,000.

So this begs the question, which one would you drive?

As I see it the pluses for the XF-R are: handles better, less money. XJ Supersport: the big dog, Jag's long tradition of brilliant aluminum alloy cars (XK120 alloy, C, D and E types).

XJ SuperSport.

Costs more, but IMO is less ubiquitous than XFR.

Make no mistake I like sportier cars, but if I had any of the above Jags, I'd most likely be cruising rather than a run at a backroad.

Hard for me to get excited about a brand that's been passed around like a drunk cheerleader. I actually had to google to be reminded of who owns it this month.

That aside I like the XF-R's more aggressive looks though it will age in a hurry.

If I were in the market for such cars Jag wouldn't be on my radar.

Jag hasn't changed ownership that much... Ford bought em in the 90s, Tata own em now. That's.. kinda it.

Not entirely sure, but without having driven them or seeing a new XJ in the flesh, I'd be leaning towards the XF. I just really like it.

if you like the XF, you like the XJ.. it's just a larger version. kinda A4/A6 type relationship. im all about the XJ, have one in a minute. but i would have the XF-R as well.

I reckon the current Mondeo is pretty smart looking too... but the XF much moreso.

The XF's problem is that because Jaguar had to completely break away from tradition, they had to radically change design and what they did is go mainstream. It's not a bad looking car, just not distinctive like the Jags of the past. Having said that though, it's a brilliant sports saloon.

I wouldn't be disappointed with either, that's for sure, but at the end of the day it has to be the XJ. It's got the clever aluminium construction, which makes it lighter and better. And apparently it is as much at home in the motorway as it is going sideways in the mountain roads.

The perfect Jag then.

Maybe mechanically...but I didn't like the XJ looks in person.

The overall styling of both isn't really that appealing to me.

82k or 111k for these? Are you kidding me? No friggin' way.

I like the XF, I don't like the XJ's rear. I think it's all wrong looking.

It's a bit difficult because the XF is butt ugly from the front, while the XJ is Butt ugly from the, well, butt.

Overall I'd probably go the XJ simply for the interior, that thing is the most stunning example of a modern interior for the past 10 years. hands down.
