The past 2-4 days have been bad.

I have added an extra step to the sign up procedure but it seems these are not bots but actually humans posting. It is hard to stop them.

On some sites they won't let you post after registering until an admin has verified the account. It's a bit of a pain but it would probably detract spammers.
