Rolling runway

Firstly if anyone knows the answer to this dont spoil it as ive seen it go over 200 pages on other forums lol

Rolling Runway.

A plane is standing on a runway that can move (some sort of band conveyer). The plane moves in one direction, while the conveyer moves in the opposite direction.

This conveyer has a control system that tracks the plane speed and tunes the speed of the conveyer to be exactly the same (but in the opposite direction).

Can the plane take off?

yes i want you to try and figure it out, but if you come on with your first post and give some big ass long technical description about how it does / doesnt work then nah i dont wnat a reply lol

No because to take-off requries the air to be moving over the wing in order to fly. If the conveyer can match the speed of the plane then the aircraft is basically not moving and thus there will be no change in the speed of the air over the wing.

I would say no, i thought it would be yes, but it can't be, the plane is essentially not moving, and it needs movement so that it can pick up more air through the wings and take off, the conveyer belt ensures the plane is not moving realtive to the air or the ground and so cannot produce the lift required..

I want to say no, but this seems like it would be some sort of trick quesiton, so i will say yes

EDIT: I have spent some time and thought this through, and I firmly beleive that it is yes now...YAY SCIENCE!

only if the runway itself was headed in the same direction that the jet was headed at an incredible speed (however much is needed to get enough lift on the wings)

Yes, in fact it would be easier I think. Because a plane takes off into the wind in order to get more lift, so if you have a conveyer moving in opposite to the plane then it would create more lift and be easier for the plane to take off.

I am probably wrong though.

if the conveyer is not creating wind than what will create lift?
