no doubt the Gullwing was the better car, in spite of its tricky handling.

Well the Corvette was made of plastic, which was quite innovative in the 50's.
As for everything else, the Merc.

Gullwing anyday. Just look at the doors.

300SL. Being the first production car with direct fuel injection should do it. The Vette only got that as an option in 57. Then there's four wheel independent suspension on the 300SL where the Vette had a solid rear axle. Also, the 300SL was introduced with a 4 speed manual, when the Vette still had the 2 speed Powerglide. Later that year a 3 speed manual became an option on the Vette, and it eventually replaced the stock 2 the following year.
Even though I'll probably not be able to afford one, the 300SL is also my personal choice. The Vette will give you the attention, but the Gullwing will give you more t'n'a than Markus Schenkenberg at a cheap 90's B-movie premiere afterparty. And I need all the help I can get.
Turning money into memories.
I think both of these cars are great to be honest and would be pleased with either one. Not sure if I prefer the first gen or second gen C1 more though.
