Don't know

I would go for V6.
less bearings would mean less mecanical loss.
If it was a option I would say a V4.
Just out from the top of my head, did not give it much thought.
bearings carry very little loss.
Piston ring contact area does though

Nice graphics, intriguing engine design.
Are you involved in the design ?
What is expected power/weight ratio ? power/size ? Fuel consumption ??

Re Original Poster;
definitely a preference for the inline 6 here.
In production form the straight six produces more torque per litre that any other conventional configuration, even V8's
(M3 3.2 straight six makes a BMEP of over 202psi, the highest recorded for any production n/a engine).
Secondly they sound great (subjective opinion).
Though the 4-cylinder could probably be made the most fuel efficient and least affected by density altitude changes.
The problem is fours don't ever sound as good as other configurations. Even a three cylinder sounds more interesting e.g. Triumph Triple. About the best sounding fours are probably the small capacity hi-revving bike engines. Again a subjective opinion).
Sound is part of the passion and interest!
I for one miss the sound of the V12 Ferrari F1 cars and shudder at the thought of the incoming 1500cc 4-cylinder turbos, ...ugh!

hmmm, find it hard to believe the M3 torque relative to capacity is higher than other cars. Do you have source for the claims ?
Problem with modern 4 cylinders is their exhausts are tuned fo refficiency and to meet more stringest sound requirements. A Lotus Twin cam on full chat with large bore 4 into 2 into 1 is sweet. BUT prefernce is the Matra V12 Open exhaust !!!!

Dr. Ulrich Baretzky, now working for the Audi engine department, was recently quoted about Aston Martin's choice for a new LMP1 engine, being a two litre in line 6 turbo. He said it was about the worst route they could go, as such engine could never be strong/stiff enough. It has already been proven by Aston's continuing engine problems ever since they got it running.
Now you may ask whether Baretzky is biased? Not necessarily as he was involved in the development of the BMW M1 racing programme where the glorified BMW 6 cylinder engines under race trim, gave nothing but problems, but at the time they had nothing else to work with.

There is nothing inherent in a I6 that would make it have higher specific torque than any other motor. Due to the inherent issues with an I6 it often makes sense to design it as a high torque motor but that is not inherent in the design.
and the problem in making an I6 high torque is to do so requires maximising the force on the crank during combustion .... which with the long I6 crank and block just gives twist.

So a straight six is shit?
(Sorry for oversimplifying the question)
Lack of charisma can be fatal.
Visca Catalunya!
no, it jsut has engineering constraints that need to be addressed.
Torsional rigidity being the main one ... and length in the engine bay and height and weight

it is not as holy as some believe it to be....it is probably not for nothing that Ferrari only ever had one straight six racing model the 118/121 LM, which was not a big success. On the other hand, the I6 of the previous Skyline generations seemed to be able to withstand a lot of abuse....
