F1 drops team orders ban + new engines for 2013

F1 chiefs drop the ban on team orders in new rules

"Now the rule has been removed, the teams may tacitly agree not to use team orders as much as possible while article 151.c, which refers to bringing the sport into disrepute, remains intact. That article warns against "any fraudulent conduct or any act prejudicial to the interests of any competition, or to the interests of motorsport generally."

    Also, the new tech specs:

    - F1 ENGINE RULES FROM 2013
    - 1.6-litre, four-cylinder turbos with energy recovery and fuel restrictions to replace current 2.4-litre normally aspirated V8s
    - Fuel efficiency to increase by a target of 35%
    - Overall power to remain same at approx 750bhp
    - Checks and balances to ensure costs are contained and performance across all engines remains comparable
    - Fuel to be limited by fuel-flow restrictions and a stipulated maximum tank capacity
    - Plan for advanced 'compound' turbos to be introduced in subsequent years
    - Power of Kers energy recovery systems to increase from 60kw in 2011 to 120kw in 2013

    So....1.6 liter 4-cyl + turbo + kers = 750bhp!

Does anybody know what "advanced compound turbos" means?

If you asked me, I'd go for a big bore 2.8L I4 quad turbo engine with variable geometry and engine brake technology. Just me fantasizing.....

And compound I believe is twin turbo technology, but the two are different sizes, the smaller one for lower in the rev range, the bigger for higher up, greatly reducing lag.

Memories of the 80's, when F1 cars made >1000 hp from tiny engines... sadly, nobody would allow this to happen again.
Personally, I think the abandoning of the V10's was much worse for F1 than this. Others may disagree, but the current V8's weren't the pinnacle of F1 engineering (or sound).

well the compact v8s make for a better car in the corners , & they are still 300cc/cylinder engines - like the latter v10's were

a 3.5 liter v10 made now would make an incredible NA powerband

but come 2013 , the highest form of circuit racing is now going to be four cylinder engines

    technically they are going to be more interesting , but still . . . . . .

Are they allowed to refuel yet?

Why cant they just do the rule along the lines of, "you have X amount of displacement, and X amount of engines you can use in a season. Go ahead and try to make as much power as you possibly can."

It seems to me like this type of rule would really push the engineering envelope. Maybe we'd get lucky and some of that engineering would find its way into our street cars.

With an extra 100cc of displacement over the toluene/cocaine-fueled '80s beasts I would hope that the numbers rise higher than 750hp.
Leon or RacingManiac (or anybody else who knows these things), how high would a motor like this rev? One of my problems with F1 currently is the cars all sound like air-raid sirens. My armchair knowledge tells me that turboes don't need to rev nearly as high as the naturally-aspirated engines to make comparable power and would hopefully sound better in the process.

The new engines will be limited to 12,000 rpm.

Boo to 4 cylinders. This is F1, not F3000 or some "feeder" series! F1 is too good to use 4 cylinder engines.

so what did the BMW engine produce at which revs in the mid eighties? IIRC well over a 1000 BHP, and I don't think it went up to 12k. More important will be the boost restriction.

According to some dodgy website, in the 1986 Benetton B186 BMW it had:

    Power 900 bhp / 671 KW @ 11000 rpm
    Torque 1066 Nm / 786 ft lbs @ 8500 rpm

Not sure what the restrictions are around boost, but there'll be fuel flow restrictions. Injection pressure is capped at 500 bar.

the engine was known to produce well over 10000 BHP in qualification trim. (not during races though).
Probably limitations in allowed fuel consumption will take away the wild character of the previous generation turbo engines anyway.
