This weekend, our racing season kicks off with the Espiritu de Montjuic, which is staged by Peter Auto on the Circuito de Catalunya in Barcelona. There will be 100s of great racing cars on track ranging from the early 1950s through to the 2010s. To get you in the right mood, we have taken a detailed look at three cars due to star this weekend.
The earliest is this BMW M1, which was the fifth M1 built to Procar specifications. Delivered new to Albrecht Krebs, it was also raced during the 1979 season by Jochen Mass. Now resplendent in its original Warsteiner colours, the M1 will race in the Classic Endurance Racing 1 series.
New for this year is that the Endurance Racing Legends series will not be a demonstration but an actual race at select events, including at Barcelona. Among the great 1990s and 2000s sports and GT cars set to compete is this Panoz Esperante GTR-1. One of seven built, it first competed in the 1997 FIA GT Championship and was later pressed back into service as an LM GTP car in 2003 and 2004. We have captured 003 both in period and at a recent outing during the 2018 Le Mans Classic.
One of the GTR-1's old rivals it will be pitched against is the mighty Bentley Speed 8 also entered in the Endurance Racing Legends series. Raced at Sebring in 2003, it is identical to the car that scored Bentley's most recent Le Mans victory. Only in private hands since the start of 2018, chassis 004/1 was already demonstrated by the current owner at the Le Mans Classic and Spa Classic last year.
