Ford Taurus
1986-
Ford was in hot water. sales were dropping drastically, Honda, who was a reliability joke in the 70s, have learned their lesson, and were offering the most reliable cars on the market. GM was offering new technology and was blowing everybody out of the water when it came to innovation. Chrysler, which was a hopeless case just a few years ago, was at full profitability, with 3 of America's best selling cars in it's lineup, teh Reliant, Omni, and Caravan. While the imports were offering reliability in their lineups with innovations such as stowage cubbys and cupholders, with sporty rides, whil Ford was still bench seats and soft suspension. But all american manufacturers were suffering from one thing- boxiness. All american cars were boxy and unaerodynamic (with a few exceptions from GM) while Ewurope was offering sleek designs. With Ford's roaring success in Europe with the Sierra, they used it's design for a new car of their own, which they wanted would bring buyers back to Ford. After rugged teamwork, FOrd unveiled a new car, called the Taurus. Ford was accually afraid to put the Taurus in production, because they thought that it was too aerodynamic and it would turn off potential buyers. Chrysler issued surveys reflected this, as they predicted that the Taurus/Sable would be hopeless flops and their Dynasty and New Yorker, which would appear 2 years later, would continue the Chrysler good sales tradition, started with the Omni and contuned with the Reilant. Ford execs predected the same thing, they were expecting the Taurus to be a modern day Edsel. Somehow, Ford gathered their courage and put the Taurus in production, and the public reaction was the exact opposite that what they thought. Taurus' flew off dealer lots, as many buyers were impressed with it's new innovations, and put Ford back in the lead. The Taurus seemed to be a reenactment of the Mustang, sales wise. The other companies scrambled to catch up, but their attempted rivalries were just futile laughable attempts comparable to trying to lift a mountain. The Taurus returned Ford to proficy, and by 1989, only 3 years after it's launch, Taurus sales cracked 1,000,000 units. In 1992, FOrd facelifted the Taurus, with a similar design, but all body panels were diffrent. In the first year of this new model, over 400,000 units sold. In 1993, Chrysler finally gathered a proper comparicy for the Taurus, the LH platform which consisted of the Dodge Intrepid, the Chrysler Concorde, the Chrysler New Yorker, the Chrysler Concorde and the Eagle Vision. These cars offered radical designs, making the Taurus' design look conventional, and as Chrysler was flying toward bankrpucy again, these cars flew off lots and got them back into teh game. They were instant rivals, but the Taurus still managed to sell better. The Taurus was redesigned in 1996, with evry square inch of the body all new. Many people didn't like this design, and teh Taurus lost it's bestseller status to the Toyota Camry in 1997. In 2000, the cars were facelifted, and the SHO was dropped. Sales were still string, but not as strong as before. The SUV craze also helped lower Taurus sales. In 2004, the Taurus got another minor facelift. The Sable has been dropped in 2005, and at the end of the 2005 model year, that Taurus was now only available to the fleet market. This has lead to rumers about how the Taurus' production will be halted in 2006. This has not yet been confirmed by Ford.
Overall, the Taurus is a part of automotive history because it ended the square designs coming out of america, as GM and Chrysler were throwing out sleek designs hoping to match the Taurus' success, and is responsible for the sleek auto designs we are seeing today. The Taurus also dominated the market for years and years, with everybody in the US and Canada buying a taurus. Today the Taurus is one of Ford's most reconizible models, and can be seen on just about every street corner. Over 7,000,000 Taurus' have been sold, and with the exception of the Model T, F-150, and Mustang, is Ford's best selling model ever.
