The opening round of the 2013 FIA World Endurance Championship will give an idea of the relative strengths of the teams with just over two months to go to the blue riband event of the year, the Le Mans 24 Hours on 22-23 June.

The entrants have been champing at the bit for the past several weeks. This year the road to Le Mans begins in Great Britain after months of intensive preparation. In LM P1, the eagerly-awaited, fabulous duel will ratchet up several notches in intensity between Audi, the reigning world championship team and winner of the 2012 Le Mans 24 Hours, and its rival, Toyota. This weekend both protagonists have entered two hybrids, although the German manufacturer will have a third car in the Sarthe. Waiting in ambush to take advantage of the fallout from this battle are two privateer teams, Rebellion Racing with two Lola-Toyotas and Strakka Racing with its HPD (Honda Performance Development). Their chances have been given a boost by the Automobile Club de l’Ouest’s decision to reduce the performance gaps between them and the works LM P1 cars.

The ten LM P2s make this category the one with the highest number of cars in the field at Silverstone. In the absence of Starworks Racing, the 2012 champion, the 2012 runners-up ADR-Delta and Pecom Racing will be out to win, while fighting off the attacks of the three very quick Morgan-Nissans entered by OAK Racing and the Greaves Motorsport’s finely-tuned Zytek Z11SN –Nissan. Among the newcomers, a close eye should be kept on the two new Lotus T128s and the Morgan-Nissan entered by Chinese squad KCMG, which is there to prepare for the coming Le Mans 24 Hours and the Asian Le Mans Series.

A no-holds-barred battle looks on the cards in LM GTE. The six cars in the Pro category are all works entries starting with the two Ferrari F458 Italias the reigning champions driven by Fisichella-Bruni and Kobayashi-Vilander. They are up against two Aston Martin Vantages and two Porsche 911 RSRs run by Manthey Racing. All the cars are driven either by former Le Mans winners or guys who’ve come from Formula 1, which gives an idea of the overall level of quality of the competition.
The LM GTE Am category has attracted eight entries starting with the Larbre Competition Corvette (Bornhauser-Canal-Rees) who are back to defend their 2012 title; they will have a tough job on their hands fighting off teams like Krohn Racing, Imsa Performance Matmut, Aston Martin, AF Corse, etc...

On Sunday there will be a fabulous scrap on the Silverstone circuit in this race, which will start at 12h00. The winners will be awarded the prestigious Tourist Trophy, one of the oldest in the history of motor racing.

The day before (Saturday 13th April) the first round of the European Le Mans Series will take place. It lasts three hours and has attracted 25 cars. Quite a few of the 2013 Le Mans 24-Hours entries will run in this race like the Thiriet by TDS Racing, the reigning European Champion in LM P2, Murphy Prototypes and Signatech Alpine with the much anticipated Alpine A450, etc...

An exceptional service: fans can follow the first round of the FIA World Endurance Championship on the ACO’s Web TV on Le Mans TV: Video Toyota to second season as well as on the new site devoted to the Le Mans 24 Hours: Site Officiel 24 Heures du Mans.

A Rebellion Lola leading FP3 at the moment from Audi? What's going on there?

Also, the LMP2 Lotus is called T128? So they now officially have two T128s??

Toyota is on pole after a very confusing qualifying session.

Toyota Racing will start tomorrow's FIA World Endurance Championship season-opening Six Hours of Silverstone from the pole after sweeping the front row in a chaotic new qualifying procedure Saturday.

A timing and scoring glitch in the new format, which calls for the average of four laps from two different drivers per car, caused confusion during each 20-minute LMP/GTE session, as not all of the times were being properly recorded on the screens.

While the No. 7 Toyota TS030 Hybrid of Alex Wurz and Nicolas Lapierre had topped the scoring charts following their four-lap average of 1:48.021, confirmation of the their pole did not come until more than one hour following the session.

It ended up being a Toyota sweep of the front row, with Anthony Davidson and Sebastien Buemi teaming for an average of 1:49.995 in the damp session. The duo will be joined by Stephane Sarrazin on Sunday.

The key for Toyota was tire choice, as both gasoline-powered LMP1s initially went out on intermediates, with the No. 7 machine switching to slicks for Wurz's stint.

"We decided to start on intermediate tires, which was a bit risky because in the beginning, there was a lot of rain," Lapierre told SPEED.com. "But it was a good choice. We were a bit conservative because the biggest mistake would have been to [crash].

"It was difficult because this new qualification is a bit complicated for everyone. But in the end, we took the right decision and we got it. It was even a 1-2 so we're very pleased with it."

Qualifying third was the No. 2 Audi Sport Team Joest of Loic Duval and Tom Kristensen, which will see Allan McNish round out the driving force in the diesel-powered LMP1 contender.

The considerable 3.262-second difference between the quickest of the Audis and the pole-sitting Toyota came with tire choice. Audi opted for wets for its first qualifying stint, followed by intermediates, whereas Toyota started on intermediates before switching to slicks for its pole-winning No. 7 car.

“The weather in qualifying made things very difficult just like the practice sessions over the past two days," McNish said. “A brief rain shower made the track slippery necessitating tire changes as the conditions in the short qualifying session changed with every lap. Loic and Tom drove brilliantly."

The No. 12 Rebellion Racing Lola B12/60 Toyota of Neel Jani, Nicolas Prost and Nick Heidfeld, which was quickest overall in final practice, will roll off fourth overall, ahead of the No. 1 Audi of defending champions Andre Lotterer, Benoit Treluyer and Marcel Fassler after Treluyer battled traction control issues during his qualifying stint.

G-Drive Racing by Delta-ADR put its Oreca 03 Nissan on pole in LMP2, thanks to a 1:55.148 average by Antonio Pizzonia and James Walker, both of whom who are making their class debuts this weekend.

A late flyer by Walker helped secure the pole for the British squad, which won here last year. Pizzonia and Walker will team with Tor Graves in the No. 25 machine tomorrow.

"They just said, 'Good job' and I came in. I didn't know where we were," Walker told SPEED.com. "I was very surprised. The average lap worked in our favor. There's pros and cons to it. But I think that definitely helped us with my lack of running in the car."

The No. 24 OAK Racing Morgan-Nissan, qualified by Olivier Pla and Alex Brundle, held provisional pole for the majority of the session and will line up second in class. David Heinemeier Hansson completes the lineup for the French squad.

G-Drive's sister Oreca-Nissan of John Martin, Mike Conway and Roman Rusinov will start third in class.

Aston Martin Racing had a clean sweep of the GTE ranks, with its fleet of four Vantage V8s taking the top two positions in both GTE-Pro and GTE-Am.

The No. 97 AMR entry of Darren Turner and Stefan Mucke took pole in GTE-Pro with a combined average of 2:00.566. Bruno Senna will join the duo on Sunday, after having limited laps thus far due to an engine change during the opening practice.

"The qualifying format is different to what anyone is used to and our directive was to go flat out," said Turner who is celebrating his birthday. "To get a good result for Aston Martin this weekend is fantastic. It’s an important year for us and we want to hit the ground running. Qualifying isn’t that important in endurance racing, but it’s certainly a nice birthday treat.”

Pedro Lamy, Fred Makowiecki and Canadian Paul Dalla Lana, making his WEC debut, will start second thanks to a 2:00.772 average.

Aston Martin's No. 96 Vantage of Jamie Campbell-Walter, Stuart Hall and Roald Goethe claimed pole in GTE-Am, with a four-lap average good enough for third quickest among the GTE contenders. It was even quicker than the two debuting factory Porsche 911 RSRs, which will start third and fourth in GTE-Pro.

An FIA WEC spokesperson confirmed to SPEED.com there was a software glitch in the timing system that prevented it from displaying all of the correct four-lap average times. However, no data was lost during the incident, and the series and its timing and scoring partner, Alkamel Systems, will work to correct the matter before the next qualifying round at Spa.

The Six Hours of Silverstone takes the green Sunday at 12 p.m. local. Watch the race live at: Live off beginning at 7 a.m. ET.

Even faster than that was in store--McNish ran a 1:42.7 and the #1 got a 1:42.9. Toyota seemed to not be able to match Audi at all once the green flag dropped. Both R18s got by within 10 minutes after the start and they walked away. Toyotas were just horrid over the bumps and in general lacked the grip and handling. Audi could also double stint their tires, and Toyota had a terrible time of doing that. Seemed to be a bad set up combined with the wrong tire choice.

Even later when Toyota got their tires straightened out, the Audis on average were about .5 of a second a lap faster. At least Toyota have their updated car coming, because if they have to stick with the '12 cars, they have as much work to do as Audi did over the winter with their '13 cars.
Power to me is having the ability to make a change in a positive way. Don't dream it, be it.

This weekend, the second FIA World Endurance Championship kicked off on the Silverstone circuit. After months of preparation the teams entered in the 2013 championship joined battle for the first time. Despite Toyota locking out the front row during qualifying on Saturday 13th April, Audi won the race with its two R18 e-tron quattros with McNish-Kristensen-Duval leading home the reigning world champions Tréluyer-Fässler-Lotterer. Not until the closing laps was the outcome of the race decided between the two cars as Tréluyer, whose R18 e-tron quattro lost transmission on the front wheels, was unable to fight off McNish’s final charge. The Scot was particularly proud to win the famed Tourist Trophy with his two team-mates, one of the most prestigious British motor racing prizes, which was awarded specially for the occasion in the British round of the WEC.

Toyota was powerless to take the fight to the Audis in 2013 configuration with the 2012 version of its TS030, all the more so as the Japanese cars suffered excessive tyre degradation. The Prost-Jani-Heidfeld Lola-Toyota entered by Rebellion Racing was the first of the privateer LM P1s to see the flag (5th).

In LM P2, the Delta-ADR Oreca 03-Nissan scored a dominant win in the hands of Graves-Pizzonia-Walker from the OAK Racing Morgan driven by Pla-Heinemeir Hansson-Brundle and the Greaves Motorsport Zytek Z11SN-Nissan of Dyson-Kimber-Smith-Marsal.

Aston Martin, which is celebrating its centenary this year, scored its first WEC wins in 2013 by dominating both the LM GTE Pro and GTE Am categories. In the Pro category, Mücke-Turner-B. Senna fought off tough competition from the Vilander-Kobyashi Ferrari F458 Italia, and in GTE AM Nygaard-Poulsen-Simonsen took the flag in first place with the Larbre Competition Corvette of Bornhauser-Canal-Rees second.

Before tackling the summit of the World Endurance Championship, the Le Mans 24 Hours on 22-23 June in which a double helping of points will be awarded, the teams in the WEC will again do battle on the beautiful Spa-Francorchamps circuit in Belgium on 4th May.

On Saturday as a curtain-raiser to the Silverstone 6 Hours, the first round of the European Le Mans Series took place, some of whose entrants will be racing in the Sarthe classic. In dreadful weather conditions, overall victory in LM P2 went to Dolan-Turvey in their Zytek Z11SN-Nissan, while in GTE, Ried-Roda-Tandy triumphed in their Porsche 911 GT3 RSR entered by Proton Competition. In GTC, victory went to Millroy/Smith et McCaig (BMW Z4, Ecurie Ecosse) and went to Pons and Ayari in LM PC (Formula Le Mans Oreca 09, Team Endurance Challenge).

Next round of the European Le Mans Championship: the Imola 3 Hours (Italy) on 18th May

I watched the first 2 and a half hours. Then had to leave unfortunately.

The first hour also clashed with the repeat of the Chinese Grand Prix, so I was changing channels relatively often.

I wouldn't say they failed, either. AF Corse are serious rivals, while Aston Martins were just too fast. I bet in Belgium Porsches will be quicker already.
