Several GTRs were converted to road use, but I would not call them unofficial LMs. They are GTRs.
If you should see a man walking down a crowded street talking aloud to himself, don't run in the opposite direction, but run towards him, because he's a poet. You have nothing to fear from the poet - but the truth.

    I didn't know that.
I was referring to the fact that usually the LM is claimed as a road version of the GTR.

The large side vent on the left side of the car (when facing the front) feeds an oil cooler that takes up most of the luggage compartment on that side on both the '95 & '96 GTRs as well as the LMs. The smaller vent on the opposite side would only be found on '95 & '96 GTRs and serves to cool the electronics as well as the fuel pump on '96 GTRs. It was not incorporated in the design of the LM, as the LM has an actual luggage compartment on that side requring a solid panel.

It may help to know that no less than 5 F1 GTRs have been resprayed in Papaya Orange, giving them the outward appearance of an F1 LM.

That's true in the literal sense, but there are so many unique bits that make an LM an LM, that no road-converted GTR will ever really match up.

For starters, and probably what is most significant is that the real LMs retain the 3-seater layout of the road car whereas all the GTRs are 2 seaters at most with the seat to the left of the driver available for passengers and the seat to the right filled with electronics and such. Here's an example of the interior in GTR #16R for reference.

Apparantly XP1LM, the LM prototype currently owned by Mclaren, has been promised to Lewis Hamilton if he wins the 2008 or 2009 F1 world championship.

I think it's a fake story, it's true that McLaren is absent from the higher position from some years, but it is in the same conditions it was before of the Hakkinen's two titles, so I don't see the exigence of such a deal with Hamilton, and then being a F1 pilot, I guess I wouldn't need any incentive to win the title...

I didn't see this on the thread, but why is the engine bay lined with gold? I know it reflects heat, but wouldn't that then just keep heat in? Or is it to protect the hatch?

its actually a conductor, one of the best conductors actually... so it draws the heat away from the engine bay.

I believe 4 were converted for road use out of the 28 GTRs made.

As a matter of fact, one of the 4 (the orange one) is up for sale at the moment. It's the one Tiff from 5th gear tested. I think he had an erection throughout the drive!
