Impressive stats do not make a a great driver... and a great driver is certainly not defined by how good his record it. Keke was one of the best there ever was.

OK, so what was Fangio's finest performance? What did you find most impressive about him?

Also, I don't think you can really compare drivers like Fangio and Schumacher (or indeed Senna and Schumi) because it wasn't until the mid-nineties that F1 drivers became Formula 1 drivers rather than racing drivers. If you look back to people like Moss, he never won a world championship against Fangio in F1, but the Argentine couldn't get near him in sportscars - and neither could anyone else. Now you have Heikki Kovalienen beating Schumi in a 360 CS when he wouldn't get NEAR him in an F1 car - it's a much more specialised game now - just look at what happened when Brundle (?) tried rallying. Talent is masked by cars (Button anyone?), but so is rubbishness or mediocrity (Fisi almost certainly fits into the latter of those two).

Great argument. What are you basing that on?

Best Formula 1 Driver in during this decade, sure.

But I found Bruce McLaren, and many more much better drivers. Bruce set up a multi-racing company, and helped spawned a supercar company. What has Schumacher set up besides a $5 million back account and driven for Ferrari?

Senna is the best F1 driver ever IMO.

If Schumacher's that good then I wonder why Alonso is starting to whoop him.....

Alonso starting to woop him.riiiiight.then ell me if he is so much better then why when tire regulations and limited downforce slowed the cars down then he starts winning.when they were still gettin over 1000 hp out of those 3.0 v10s and it was more head to head IMO alonso was not a front runner.and for the record kimi should have won it in 2005 if it wasn't for the mclaren teakms shitty reliability.Schumi is on @ different level @nd even if kimi does sign with the Scuderi@ @nd schumi doesn't retire...kimi will still be number 2

What about Senna? Thought you said Schumacher is better. Don't forget F1 cars were much slippier back then.

They never got over 1000bhp from the V10s... there was a rumour that Honda had managed to get 1000bhp from their end-of-season detonation special, but they never regularly put out more than 950bhp in race trim.

In principle, I agree with you Porscheman, but I do wish you would put a little more thought into the way you write you posts... why put '@' when 'a' will do quite nicely. And do re-read your thread replies before you hit send - they are often very difficult to understand.

Lads its extremely unfair to compare drivers from different eras...Back in Moss's era the driver's performance had a greater bearing on the result whereas these days the car, IMO, is more important that the driver...
There is no doubt that Schumacher is one of the best but i dont think that he can be called the best...

The best of *my* life is Jim Clark, if by that you mean the time that I've cared about racing. Fangio retired when I was very young. Senna would be second and Schumacher third in terms of driving ability. Senna and Schumi both suffer from overinflated egos as shown by Ayrton foolish actions with Alain Prost and Schumacher's foolish actions with just about everybody. Clark was both a superbly talented racer and a gentleman.

Nope. It's just easier to win nowadays. Look at Senna ... he could drive. Put Schumacher in one of the old racing cars and then watch him wet himself. I imagine it to go something like this: "Z0mg! Whai isernt teh carz driving itself lol wtf?!" and "Whar is mai safty gear N0eS!!11!".

Michael Schumacher is only doing well because everyone on the grid are pussies. There's no real talent in F1 nowadays, just money-hungry ego-monsters (as opposed by the adreneline-monkey ego-monters of old ).

That is why I no longer watch F1 and much prefer going to my local supermarket carpark and watch what F1 commentators could only describe as "COMPLETE MAYHEM! THIS IS THE MOST EXCITING THING EVAR!!11!!".

    Done.
