So cold air hits the intercooler in the front. An electric motor pumps water from the FMIC to the rear, where it's used to cool the incoming air.
Right?

An intercooler refers to cooling the compressed air before it enters the engine. this allows more boost because it lowers the likley hood of compression combustion (knock).
What they are using in this case is an intercooler that has TWO seperate elements. the compressed air flows in and through several small passages. The intercooler also has water flowing through it. But instead of working like a radiator (hot in , cold out) the water is cold coming in and it cools the compressed air. Therefore, it is warm coming out.
I don't know where the components are located but im pretty sure that is the intercooler in the center and, as it is on the boxter, there are two radiators located in front of the front wheels.
I understand how an AWIC (air-water intercooler) works. But on a mid- or rear-engine car, with a FMIC, there would need to be huge amounts of piping routed through the car to get the cooled, pressurized air to the motor. And if you ran an air-air IC, you'd have huge pressure losses through the pipe. With a AWIC, you'd have the extra weight of the long piping plus the water in it.Originally Posted by johnnyperl
I guess I'm either misunderstanding their system, or they used a crappy setup. Maybe a diagram would help. Ersumthin'.

It just looks like the radiator, not an intercooler

OK so wait, this is a RUF engined car with a Studio Torino body? I am a wee bit confused.
