I have a 1982 VW rabbit with an 1984 vw GTI engine. Its a 1.8L engine, but it has carbs. Now is that not original? Or did they switch from Fuel Injection to carbs. I have the vin number handy, as the car is set-up for racing.

GTI should tell you what you need to know.
O gotcha, the 356 is sitting in the garage, slowly being worked on. Theres more work to do on the 356 then the rabbit.Not a "knock off", just a swap that then got carbs. What happened to the 356?
I got the rabbit for 6 grand, racing prepared.. still minor things on that. But not as much as the 356
