    Pentium 2 upgrades?

I recently got an old Pentium 2-era Sony Vaio from my mother. It currently sucks beyond belief, with 128MB SDRAM, 13.6GB HD and it requires CTRL-ALT-DELETE.

Now my question is: should I modify it, and if so, with what?
or strip it and build a new computer using the shell?

Remember that I don't have that much to spend.

    Thanks.
I'm dropping out to create a company that starts with motorcycles, then cars, and forty years later signs a legendary Brazilian driver who has a public and expensive feud with his French teammate.

Parts for old computer are generally pricey. I suggest you sell everything but the case.

I once wanted to give my old K6-2 based computer a little boost, but found out buying an entry-level computer would make me save money. I bought a Compaq Presario and the K6-2 is now history.

trash the case, and get an synthetic or corn oil (although corn can smell after a while) oil-filled aquarium glass box, and run the computer while its sumbmerged in oil. when the cool-factor fades away and it stops being a awesome topic of conversation when you friends come over, throw it away or use it to fold at home, not that you'll fold much with a pentium 2.

Doing any upgrades with it isn't worth it.
PSU won't be any use for latest mobos, so even the case is doubtful.

Put LINUX on it and use it as a plaything then sell it on. Maybe pick up more RAM on fleabay.
You'll get more as a usable UNIX/OpenOffice machine than a brain-dead MS thingie.

    get one of these:

seriously though, it sounds like all you can do is give it more ram, maybe swap for a bigger hard disk (if its a 2.5 inch) , otherwise sell it whole or for parts on ebay. Unless your happy with its as a simple function computer or someone else has a genius idea then....i'm not sure of its uses....wait a minute! JC has a great idea:

apple didn't like it much either:

    hahahaha that cracked me up

on a serious note.. pentium 2 is beyond repair at the best of times. In terms of modern day-use. I have a P2 system in the garage with not a drip of hope left in it

    AMD!? you're kidding me right!?
Both my tower computers run AMD Athlon prosessors and they suck ass, Pentium 4 is way better, Intel Pentium M seems to be better too.

Pentium M is out of date, Pentium 4 and athlon both had their good and bad points, but neither were much better than the other in many respects.

It's not the computer it's the owner, I have 2 Athlons 1 is a 2000xp and the other is a XP-M 2500 over clocked for the past 4 years @ 2.5gh/z, One thing with AMD is they have there speeds and waste them fake intels bitches who think there good cause they have clock speeds over 3gh/z, When in reality a 3200XP is as good and cheaper as a 3.2gh/z P4. You should try AMD X2's

Well, I have to recommend a new PC also..

Unless you want a basic web-browser/office PC that thing is as good as a doorstop.

Still, you could always chuck it to me and let it be assimilated.

    *edit*
    Oh, btw..
You should all remember, each CPU maker has their own plus & minus points.
ALL CPUs are gonna suck if you don't have proper thermal management.
Most Intels tend to be better at media encoding whilst most AMDs tend to be better for gaming.
Although that is something of a generalisation it tends to hold true, but I haven't really messed around with any of the multi-core CPUs yet.

I slap together a movie on Clone dvd 2 a full 7gig plus encoding to 4.4 dvd-r in 20min or less burnt out. I think that's pretty good.

    Thats on a XP-M 2500 @ 2.36gh/z (Summer time setting) I'm still only using 512mb ram.
